Last Saturday, the day was sun ny, the sky blue and the grass green at Clinton Park bordering Franklin High School. Thousands o f seem ingly carefree people played, ate, re laxed and enjoyed sights, sounds and aromas, romas. A sloping h ill formed a natural amphitheater tor main stage events featuring jazz, rag, pop, country, bluegrass, blues, aerobic dance, gymnastics, Balkan dance, baton and drum corps and belly dancing. Under the biggest shade tree around was the place to sit fo r a Theatre W orksop performance o f K ip lin g ’ s “ Just So” stories. The Beer Garden's entertainm ent of- Hilled as a fundraising and com- »«unity-building celebration, the Southeast Summer Festival, spon sored by Southeast Portland neigh borhoods, proved as popular as sim ilar Portland events o f the past few sears. The Reading Tree Making learning fun by Claudia Fisher The Reading Tree, an eleven- vear-old Northeast community e f fort to provide summer teaching o f phonics, love o f books through story hours, reading games and free books to all children, as well as other games and music, had its an nual awards day at the program's ei d. August 12th. Certificates for accomplishment were given to children by their teachers, Mrs. Day and Mrs. A n thony, and by youth workers Char lene Sanders, Dexter Sanders and Ella Taylor. Other youth workers were Nari Reichling, Houng Nygen and Ellray Wilson. Director for the summer program is Bea Anderson, a teacher at Tub- man School. Assisting her were Linda M cDowell, Louise Pritchett and L olita Darby. The program is run and sponsored by a board con sisting o f L illia n Herzog, Betty W hite, Marie Taylor and others. Funded by donations and staffed by volunteers, the popular program uses books donated by Portland Public Schools and other interested persons. Self-reliance demonstrations in cluded container gardening, canning and preserving, soapmaking, bike and tool maintenance and safety, storm window construction, solar food dryers and cold frames, self- defense/martial arts, energy conser vation techniques and financing, haircutting, quilt and puppet mak ing, poetry and discussions o f Southeast self-reliance possibilities. Sprinkled throughout the festival ties were clowns, story tellers, poets and a friendly neighborhood green dragon. Other free expressions included creative movement, exercise and dance, painting a mural on outside wall of the restrooms and lots o f smiles. Closing out the day’ s events was the popular performances o f “ Kukrudu,” a seven-piece band led by master drummer Obo Addy, who merges traditional W est African and jazz styles. Finally, pyrotechnic ar tist John S inclair presented his “ Theater o f F ire ,” an incredibly spectacular low-level and aerial fire works display he calls "C o lo r- storm,” greeting in bright hot style the cooling o f dusk and bidding tarewell to a Southeast celebration of diversity and togetherness. .• • • • e e e e e e e e e e V 5L vopeyes Yachts o' fun M ultnom ah County Com m is sioner Gladys McCoy invited a group o f youngsters to have “ Yachts O ’ F u n " w ith a cruise down the Willamette River on Sat urday evening, August 21.
