Les Femmes scholarship tea Black voting-age population risesto 17 million The number o f voting-age blacks rose 44 per cent from 12 m illion in 1970 to 17 million in 1980, with four states reporting a black electorate o f one million or more, according to a new report from the Commerce De partment's Census Bureau. New York in 1980 had the largest num ber o f voting age blacks (1 .6 m illio n ) follo w ed by C a lifo rn ia , Texas, and Illinois. The increase re flects the lowered voting eligibility to 18 years in all states, and growth o f the black population, up 17.3 per cent from ,970. Two-thirds o f the District o f C ol um b ia’s electorate is black. States with the highest proportion o f vot ing-age blacks are Mississippi (31 per cent), South Carolina and Loui siana (27 per cent), G e o r g ia ^ * p^< cent), Alabama (23 per cent), M ary land (21 per cent), North C arolina (20 per cent) and V irg in ia (17 per cent). In 1980, blacks comprised 10.3 per cent o f the total voting-age pop ulation nationally, with 33 per cent living in the South. Leader ship training , com m unity service, personal guidance and development are the major thrusts emphasized in working with the youth. Les Femmes a nn u ally presents youth who graduated fro m high school the previous June as debu tantes and cavaliers at a ball which is held in December o f each year. This debutante and cavalier ball serves as the clim atic event o f the training for the young women and men. A scholarship is awarded each debutante and cavalier. Mrs. Betty Stephens is president o f Les Femmes and M rs. Betty Thompson is chairman o f the Schol arship Committee. The public is In vited to attend the Scholarship Tea The Spanish-origin voting age population comprised about 3.3 per cent o f the total electorate in 1980. C alifo rn ia and Texas together con tained h a lf o f the Spanish-origin electorate (2.8 m illion and 1.8 m il lio n ), follow ed by New York (1.1 m illio n ) and F lo rid a (6 2 9 ,0 0 0 ). Nearly 70 per cent o f the Hispanic voting-age p o p u latio n resided in these four states. The report notes that women are the majority o f the voting-age popu lation in all states except A laska, H aw aii, Nevada, and W yom ing. It projects that the nation’s voting age population will reach 170 million in November 1982, a 3 million increase over the total for the 1980 election and 29 million more than in Novem ber, 1972. TRESSIE DIXON The Les Femmes held its annual scholarship tea Sunday, August 13, 1982, at the home o f Mrs. Charles Black. In special tribute to the late M rs. Tressie D ixon, long-time club member and civic activist, the tea featured a memorial scholarship to be given during 1982 to a com munity youth. Mrs. Dixon was past com mandrcss, M in a C o u rt #142, Daughters o f Isis, past worthy m a tron, Order o f Eastern Star, Im per ial Directress o f the Isiserettes, a youth group o f the Daughters o f Isis, member o f the L ite ra ry Re search Club, the Portland Section o f the N a tio n a l C o u n cil o f Negro W o m en , O regon A ssociation o f Colored Women's Clubs; was active in the P T A , Boy Scouts and G irl Scouts, and was an active member o f the Mount Olivet Baptist Church o f Portland. while 8.3 million reported voting in the 1980 election. The black outmigration from the South that began in W orld W ar I and which spread settlement o f blacks throughout the United States u n til the m id-*70s considerably equalized the regional distribution of blacks. Because, as of Sep- tember 5, most (if not all) buses will be equipped with rear opening d<x»rs for boarding. Which means passholders can board back there too. T hats right, no need to show the driver your pass! As for cash-paying customers, they must still board the bus up front, tell the driver their destination (or what zone they are traveling to), and drop the exact amount into the farebox. He’ll punch a button and the ticket Dispenser will issue a single ride ticket complete with date, time and zone. (This, too, doubles as a transfer.) ENTER THE FARE INSPECTOR. So who’s going to check and make sure everyone's keep ing honest? Fare Inspec tors. They’ll be boarding buses at random, frequently, to check for “Proof of Riyment." Those who don’t have it won’t be thrown in solitary con finement, but they could be tabbed for a $20 surcharge fare. NEW DIRECT ROUTES MAKE OUR BUSES EVEN FASTER. Besides these major im provements in the buses, we’ve made some equally major im provements in our routes. Espe cially east of the river and in the north and northwest areas. More buses, more service, more direct routes. So at last you can travel straight across town with out ever going downtown. If you wish. TAKE A FREE SPEED RIDING COURSE. Does all of this mean riding the bus is going to be difficult? No. Just different. In fact, once everybody gets the hang of it, these really will be the fastest buses in the country. Not only in boarding, but eventually in traveling time; because w ell be able to cut minutes off many routes. To make it all happen, of course, each rider needs to know his or her own zones, routes, tickets, etc. So, as you’ve probably seen. Tri- Met has been holding Bus School aboard big yellow demonstration buses.
