He came into the Urban League Tournam ent immediately following a single victory to take first place in the singles of the Port land Public Parks Tournament Au gust 6th. In doubles. Tom Clark and Bob H orning, two outstanding senior players, gave tournament fans a real treat by taking Heinz and partner John LaPlante (UP Coach) to 3 sets in the semi-finals. Four Northeast Portland favor ites walked away with trophies. H arold Johnson and Rich Single- ton, two Irving Park regulars, took first and second place respectively in the age-35-and-over men’s singles. A1 Clay took home the second place honors in the m en’s open singles. Clay excited the crowd with a 3-set victory over fourth seeded Hal Bar ton in the semi-finals. Although he lost in straight sets to Heinz 6-4, 6-4 in the final, he exhibited a superb game of solid ground strokes, in cluding some spectacular passing shots. Stanley Sykes took the Class B m en’s singles in a breeze. Sykes was never seriously challenged, and the 15-year-old Jesuit High School player showed the potential of a budding tennis star. T ournam ent D irector Ronny Adair would like to thank the spon sors o f this First Annual Benefit Tennis T ournam ent. Support was received from KATU-Channel 2, Osborn and Ulland (Lloyd Center), Raleigh Hills Racquet Club, Tennis Northwest, Nike Inc., and Mr. Ten nis. By presstime, seven of the sche duled nine events were completed. The w om en’s singles and m en’s doubles will be completed whenever the weather and player's schedules permit—sometime this week. McCartney went on to win the Los Angeles triathlon, cinching the California regional USTS championship.
