I Portland Observer, August 4, 1982 Page Basketball comes clean by A I McGUberry The song is ended, but the melody still lingers on in college sports. Just the other day San Francisco U n ive rs ity , one o f the top college programs in the nation, closed their highly successful program down. I he school that brought fame to its campus by the great Hill Russell and K .C . Jones said it would not continue to fool the public. The no toriety has been a bit too much. I hey tried to clean house before and brought a new athletic director and u new coach to start fresh but you can’t sleep comfortably on dirty linen. So the change o f athletic man agers d id n ’ t alter the system. The smell just would not go away. I he w in -n o -m a tte r-w h a t is all over college sports and w ill not change until the college presidents change. W hat kids are in college for must be d efin e d . O rig in a lly it was thought that they were there to earn a degree but that is not always the case. M any arc in school to play fo o t b a ll, basketball, etc. They attend very few classes and drive expensive cars and receive a check like anyone with a job. T o the kids it is a job. M an y schools are suspended by the N .C .A . A. and the cash register still keeps ringing. Not being able to attend a bowl game or jo in in the basketball tournament doesn't hurt. Business goes on as usual. Boston C ollege had a betting scandal in basketball. Players were shaving points but the school kept on th e ir busy schedule and the league they were in didn’ t even slap their wrist. W hy should anything change in college sports? Everyone is doing the same thing. Cheating. George Rogers, just out o f c o l lege, admitted buying lots o f drugs. Do you think he started using drugs when he got into the pro ranks? No way! George was using drugs all the time in college too— you can bet on that! The integrity o f sport is at stake. The lesson must be taught in Jr. H igh School. W ith o u t the proper grades you just w o n ’ t play. H ave you ever listened on T .V . to an ath lete talking to the announcer? Most c a n 't even speak the English la n guage. What a shame. Let’s let col lege be for educating kids and not exploiting them. W hat about coaches? M ost just jum p from one school to another. Whoever can cheat the best gets the best jobs. But there are coaches who kids can look up to and respect, like Bobby K n ig h t, John T h o m p so n , Dean Smith and their kind, who be lieve in building character and not just w inning games. So le t’ s start w ith athletic directors and adm is sions officers and see that only qual ified kids w ith proper grade aver ages get into colleges. Let coaches be treated like history teachers and not like gods. Colleges will then func tion as learning institutions and not like training camps for sports pro fessionals. The fans and parents must be happy that one school is standing up for the right. And maybe this might get all the college presidents to stop counting the gate and do their jo b , which is supposed to be education. L et’s hope that this Catholic school that is trying to win back respect will be the example for all athletic pro grams to follow. Let’s start teaching the kids honesty and integrity and let the game be for fun after a hard day in the books. Keep watching— it has to happen. Sport will soon clean its own mess. Jackie's dream. . . by A t McGUberry Frank Robinson and Hank Aaron were inducted in to the H a ll o f Fam e. It was a great day for these two greats who carried on in the tra dition o f Jackie Robinson. H an k, a very emotional man, got caught up in the feeling o f the day. W ith tears in his eyes he rem em bered the hurt he received in break ing Babe R uth’s long-standing rec ord. Analysis Frank, M r. C ool, as always, just thanked God and fam ily for having the chance and the talent to perform as only he could. I t ’ s hard to believe that only 33 years ago Jackie Robinson dashed in to the sport scene, changing the course o f sport forever. A fter 35 years the black athlete is still considered just an entertainer; very few m anage, coach or own sport franchises. M an y are q u a li fied, but few are considered for po sitions after their skills are gone. I challenge Am erica to be Am erica. Let freedom ring. A nd let race be only a word for the dictionary. Let talent rise to the top o f the ladder in m edicine and in spo rt. Let sport lead the nation in fair play. W c can do it. I can see Jackie com ing around th ird , his spikes gleam ing as he slides home. L e t’ s not let his spirit die. A w inner a l ways wins. How about it America? There are eight black athletes en shrined in the H a ll o f Fame: Ernie Banks, W illie M ays, Bob G ibson, Roy C am panella, Jackie, Roberto C lem en te, F rank R obin so n , and H a n k . It w asn’ t easy fo r any o f them to achieve greatness under a veil o f prejudice. I wonder if Jackie is smiling today. O r is there still that frown on his face, wishing and hop ing that Am erica w ill lose its fight w ith color and w in the race o f intearitv? I hope that in my time I w ill see success in sport, and in all other ca reers, be aw arded to the best, no matter the color o f the person. In 35 years we are still limping in this area o f prejudice. L e t’ s start running and enjoy life. It must hurt to hate. ro cket WE'RE HERETO HELP PRO FOOTBALL SCMFDOLF' R^>SE CITY APPLIANCE EXPERT SERVICE n o s e city APPLIANCE 283 3472 M3 - 4 Part* • Service Call* • Repair 'i u n i n la a AN w o rt pa doim od by qualified tar hnicians e»l m atariaia uaad in rapair of th»a uni» ara of flrai quality an«f gua> antaad for a period of nm aty days after data of repair Not responsible for d a m a g e dona by failure of 286-0795 HUMAN RESOURCES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 941,995/yr. entry rate.
