He was a Chief Petty O ffic e r in the submarine group in the Q u a rte rm a ster, w hich, in the N avy, is responsible for navigation — the chartin g and p lo ttin g o f courses by the stars and landmarks. Chavis joined the Navy in Philadel phia but was born in G re en v ille, South Carolina. Chavis says he has always liked to cook and, while he was in the naval service, he taught him self how to cook. H e likes to fix spicy foods, has a special New Orleans gumbo, is proud o f his fancy garnishes: his radish roses, the carrot curls, and other food carvings. C havis also bakes pies. The strawberry chiffon he makes is legendary, and the blue berry pie he makes, with crumbs in layers, had everybody drooling. Chavis has three daughters, 23, 21, and 19. H e ’s divorced, and "u n attached." L lo y d Gaskin spent 26 years as o ffic e manager in the engineering departm ent o f R C A G lo b a l C o m munications in San Francisco. He retired last year and moved back to Portland, his home town, although he was born in Cheyenne, W y o m ing. Gaskin is also an art b u ff, a se rious collector. H e w ill be bringing some o f his collection to Portland soon and will show some o f it. Gas kin says he’s basically a meat-and potatoes coo k, and prefers oven cooking to other methods.
