The pageant was founded by Jimmy Bang-Bang Walker back in 1965 The Miss Tan Portland has since become a festive event, for 17 years strong, when Lois Johnson was crowned the first Miss Tan o f 1965. W alker, as president of Knockout Industries felt a moral responsibility to all black women in the world to make its contribution by creating a medium through which the in stallation o f pride could be imbedded in the hearts o f women o f color in the state o f Oregon. W alker believes the continuing success o f Miss Tan over the years is a result o f the Miss Tan concept, a concept which emphasized the natural beauty, talent, and poise o f our women. The pageant gives women o f color more confidence, and allows the general public to become more aware o f her tremendous talent and other assets, which, until now, have been over shadowed by the image o f racial taboos. This year's pageant director is Ms. Ronee W alker. The contestants have had a very busy sche dule preparing for the big day— so busy that they need to have a group chaperone. Ms Claudia W y a tt. In addition to regular rehearsals, the contestants had time to make a visit to M ayor Ivancie s chambers and dropped in to say hello to Commissioner Jordan. The contestants also spent an afternoon at Cora Smith H air Designs, where each contestant received personal con sultations on make-up, grooming and carriage. Even more exciting was the contestants’ appearing on K P T V ’s Dialogue and K A T U ’s A M Northwest talk shows. Other events included an outing at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor and the annual Miss Tan Picnic at Peninsula Park. Miss Tan 1982 will receive wardrobes from both Fred Meyer and Nike. Inc., a necklace and charm from Stevens 4 Son Jewelry, a scholarship from Glorea LaVonne M odeling Schools, and other prizes totalling over $1500 in cash and merchandise Each contestant will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, talent and evening gown. The panel o f judges for the contest are Kathryn Bogle, June Brown. Butch Coors, Anise H all, Tony Hopson, Bob H u ri, Jim M cCrory, Debbie Sloope, Ulysses Tucker, Jr., and Clayton Welch. The big event will be hosted by John Davis o f K G W -T V and Cora Smith o f Cora Smith Hair Designs. Entertainment for the show will consist o f Ken Berry, Steven Swanson, the Paragon Dancers and special guest. Also on hand will be Miss Tan 1982, Dorothea Rounds, to crown the new Miss Tan.
