Page 8 Portland Observer, June 10, 1982 entertainment PRO STYL SHOP MC Sweet Music Man Jim m y Smith, Musician, great Jazz Organist. It has been 25 years since Jimmy Sm ith’s musical talents first became widely known to the jazz com munity. Due to his unique stylings on organ, an instrument though not un known to Jazz, that had its range expanded by M r. Smith’s artistry. In 1955, as Jazz was being created in many styles, one o f the styles that was starting to evolve was a style that can best be described as heavy blues, tinged funky feeling music. This blues dominated Jazz may have been ex pressed best by the instrum entation o f the organ, am plified guitar, tenor saxophone, and drums. The man, the artist who captured the essence o f the blues groove, drove it to its heights, most dram atically was Jim m y, M r. Smith. The organ is the tool o f his trade. But d o n 't get the w rong idea. Jim m y Sm ith is an accomplished well- trained musician able to reach inside many different idioms and moods o f Jazz and exert his ideas into them. In The Fantastic Jim m y Smith we find J.S. in various and interesting mu sical situations, sometimes in a trio setting, and at other times w ith a tenor saxophone added, and there’s even a vocal quartet for more variety on this album. On ‘ ‘Stranger in Paradise,” Jimmy leads the musicians through this pret ty song and shows his excellent skills o f accompaniment with a ballad con text. ‘ ‘ Jim m y’ s Jam.” Nice jum p tune, the melody is played by Jimmy and the tenor sax, w ith a catchy Latin rhythm played by the drums. For the solos the band shifts to straight four beats. The tenor sax takes the first solo, but listen, check how Jimmy builds his solo to a climax. ‘ ‘ I t ’ s A Sin To Tell A L ie .” The chore o f playing the melody is split on this song that has been around fo r a long time. First the tenor sax plays a phrase, Jimmy plays the next one, then they play the third phrase together. Good arrangement. 917 S.W. "S kelton draws his best characterizations fro m the h a lf-w o rld o f illiterates, imbeciles, and ine briates. He has insight and compassion, and a kindly respect for those who are not quite “ all there.” He has an inner feeling fo r the naive and slow- w itted, the unbright, and the schlemiels. To im itate a lunkhead w ithout malice or derision is quite a feat—and Skelton brings it o ff every tim e.” His best known characters include Junior, the “ mean widdle b o y " o f “ I dood i t ” fame, San Fernando Red, the corrupt p o litician, Deadeye, the bandit, C auliflow er M cPUgg, the punch-drunk pugilist, Clem Kadiddle- hopper, W illie Lum p-Lum p, the drunk and everyone’ s favorite itinerant, Freddy the Freeloader. This one is Jim m y’ s showcase all the way. He illustrates here how he got his reputation. “ I Had the Craziest Dream.” Float w ith Jim m y through the dream feel o f this song. The tenor saxist leads us through this musical fantasy land, but it is Jimmy Smith who lays down the limits o f where the dream can take us. Listen as J.S. builds the song at the end to wake us from the sleep w ith smooth building dynamics. “ Tell M e” and “ I Hear A Rhapsody,” both w ith vocal lead spotlights Jimmy backing a very good male vocalist. Jimmy slides in and out o f these songs with such skill you hardly realize he is playing. “ Jeepers Creepers.” Jim m y jumps on this bright rendition o f this stan dard song. Jim m y pushes the tenor saxist to a rousing solo, then digs in him self w ith both hands, serving him self w ith a generous helping o f the groove. “ Jimmy Swings.” A blues tune written by Jimmy, bearing a taste o f his compositional skill. Through this twelve bar blues session, Jim m y swings and sways. When Jimmy swings, it w ill make you feel like taking a tw irl or two on the dance floor. “ M isery.” The weight o f the melody is carried by a soulful tenor voice, that reaches into the corners o f the song. This song is o f different digs than the others on the album. It sounds like it could go right into the do-wap bag, but Jim m y’s accompaniment manages to hold the song right at the edge o f the idiom. I t ’ s very reminiscent o f rhythym and blues. When it comes down to house rocking rhythm and grooves, nobody does it better, or more meaningfully than the organ master Jimmy Smith.
