'‘Chicago City Slicks Bring Fashions to the Wilds o f the Northwest” T h e Ebony Fashion F air Show filled the city with the Look o f Ele gance. This unique show traveled to P ortland by way o f G re y h o u n d - complete with fashion sketches on props providing a background for over 200 garments and accessories. Twelve nation-wide selected manne quins giaccu i n c Civic Auditorium with their individual interpretations . . . from the slick glass performance of the Chicago Airline Model to the novice fo o tw o rk o f E b o n y ’s 18- year-olds. The obvious concern for beauti fully coiffeured hair was forsaken, however, C la iro l hair color tones framed the faces with hues o f gold en to p az, red ginger and intense black velvet. Fashion Fair M ake-U p Cosmetic colors were highlighted in four face colors— cherry, burnt alm ond, fuchsia and m u lb e rry .. . .The mod els spanned the complete circumfer ence o f "Black is Beautiful." sapphire with an emphasis on the Oceanic Blue o f the Oregon Coast . . .and all that jazz. Sculptured lines and painstaking concern for fine detail were appar ent by the yards o f fabrics viewed by Portland’s Beautiful People.. .haute couture iu tcip rciaiio u s o f A m e ri can, Italian and French designers. N atural fabrics were favored, as seen, the causual elegance o f the touch o f luxurious silk to the nubby textures o f linen, twills, wools, an gora sweaters and bulky cable knits. Usage o f leather and suede were dom inant— trimmed with foxtails, mink and the absolutely, ultimate and elegant d etailin g o f sable. Lambswool and cashmere were also strong. W h o ’s W ho in Fashion. . . a leg end in avant-garde craftsmanship and creating the finest tra d itio n .. . C h ris tia n D io r was favored by Ebony Fashion Commentator Shay- la Simpson. A host o f new black de signer garments were seen. Shayla’s gold dress worn in the first scene was hot o ff the sewing machine o f an L .A . designer and was a gift for the exposure. Featured were slight drop-shouldered lean look o f the double breasted, tw o -b u tto n jackets and suits. Bordeaux, bur gundy and gray are the dom inant colors for this season’s men’s wear. Dominant colors seen on the run way were teal, bo rd eau x, scarlet, persim m on, h yacin th , moss and smoke. Saying "g o o d -b y e " to P ortland, Ebony’s Fashion Fair is on the road again with 18 shows to perform before their three m onth fair will be completed. Designers are placing empha sis on casual dressing. Garments can be purchased as separates. Women must make the choice o f w hat ¿t fashionable. Most important for fall are fiat boots with no height to the heel. Street length coats were totally o m itted from the lin e -u p . Short jackets were emphasized and fu r coats were strong.
