He celebrated his 20th year in the music busi ness w ith the release o f tw o o f his finest albums ever— C ity L ig hts and M o v i n ’ Upside The Blues— both o f which have become special favorites w ith lis teners across the co un try. Born James H a rre ll M c G r iff in P h ila d e lp h ia . P ennsylvania, he comes fro m a m usical fa m ily ; his fa th er, H a rre ll and his m oth er, Beatrice, both played the piano. By the tim e he had finished Roosevelt and G erm antow n H igh Schools, Jim m y was playing bass, drum s, sax and vibes Yet, despite all o f this musical prowess, Jim m y had the idea he was big enough (6 ft, 165 lbs.) to become a policeman and enrolled at the Penn Institute o f C rim in o l ogy in his hom etow n. Jim m y M c G riff started playing in public at a small club in south Jersey. He augm ented his ‘ hands o n ’ experience w ith studies at P h ila d e lp h ia ’ s C om be C ollege o f M usic and at The J u illia r d S chool in New Y o rk . He landed his first professional jo b in the m id ’ 50s w ith Big M aybelle and soon a lte r cut his first record in Scranton, Pennsylvania w ith a group that in c lu d ed Charles Earland (also now a w ell-know n organist) on tenor sax. Today, Jim m y numbers some o f the best known jazz musicians in the w o rld among his colleagues: as a leader he has recorded w ith Kenny B urrell, Frank Fost er. Jerome R ichardson, Eric Gale, J.J. Johnson, G rady T ate. Blue M itc h e ll, Joe Newman, and M el Lewis to name just a few. He has also toured ex tensively w ith Buddy Rich, Toots Thielm ans and Stanley T urren tine . Jim m y's records have been best sellers since the M c G r iff version o f the Ray ( harles tune “ I G ot A W o m a n " hit the international spotlight in 1962. In tact, his tw o newest releases bring the to ta l num ber o f album s on which Jimmy M c G riff is the leader to the magic golden num ber o f 5 0 .. .and in cluded on those many sides are over 80 o rig in a l c o m p o s itio n s — m any o f which have been used by other jazz greats on their own impressive records.
