(Photos: J im m y Robinson) College athletes should be paid by A I McGilberry College football and basketball is moving onto the financial pages and o ff the sports pages. Folks, it is now classified as high finance or big bus iness— and I mean big business. C ollege fo o tb a ll games draw big crowds at top prices. College Bas ketball stadiums are not big enough for the crowds they can hold. Now that the federal governm ent and state governments have cut aid to the universities the sports factories on campus will pick up the slack. The signs started when the fo o t ball and basketball schedules were extended to more games. The bas k etb all tourney was extended to more teams, and more bowl games appeared on the scene. Behind all this activity stands tele vision, calling all the shots and de- An O ra l H is to ry P ro g ram ü & manding more and more. Greed is a funny thing. It sticks on a ll it touches in the sport life ; principles and morals go right out the window. The C ollege Presidents fo rg o t what they were there fo r— to edu cate and to train the future citizens. The man who can bring in the most money from all sources gets all the praise and tenure. This is now the Chancellor’s prime jo b — to bring in more revenue. And what a job they are doing! They turn their heads when deans o f admission adm it kids who can’t read or write. Their only concern is can they run or jum p or both. College coaches whose payrolls are thin condemn other coaches for paying athletes too much money. Digger Phelps o f Notre Dame U n i versity needs more money to keep pace with the swift providers o f his profession. I am hoping that very soon some one o f stature w ill come fo rw a rd and declare all D ivision I College Sports semi-pro. Let this arm be an investm ent package. Let the kids learn think trade to prepare for the N .F .L . Let the N .F .L . pay for this preparation and cut out the sham and deceit. Then the games w ill be real and the cheating will stop. I love Moses M alo n e . W hen he got out o f high school he listened to the colleges and the professionals try to lure him. To Moses they a ll sounded the same. He just took the highest bidder and started playing ball. Come on Coach, pay the guys and let’s play ball. PERS PURPOSE: Replaces one-year levies approved last year and the old, in adequate tax base with a revised tax base of 1180,747,060. Provides funds for operating expenses Including teachers, textbooks, supplies and maintenance to maintain basic education for 82,400 Port land children. Ensures that 100% of the Portland School District Levy qualifies for State property tax relief. Explanation: Despite recent reductions in levels of administration and classroom support, inflation and reduced levels of State and Federal sup port require a revised tax base to prevent a major decline in the quality of education for Portland's children. Voters last revised the tax base back in 1968. In 1981-82, the base was 1 9 2 ,3 6 4 ,9 7 6 . T h at same year votes approved a d d itio n a l levies of •25,781,914; of thet emount, 84.5% did not qualify for property tax re lief. Thia measure will increese the property tax rate which will be partially offset for many homeonwers by State tax relief. W IL LIA M J. RADADOVICH Director of Elections Multnomah County 10115 S.E.
