Billy Ray Bates, super-sub o f the Portland Trailblazers, was voted N ational Basketball Association player o f the week for the period ending April 11. Bates is the second Trailblazer to win the award this season. Mychal Thompson was named as the week’s top player back in the first week of the season. . . . The Washington Redskins have signed quarterback Joe Theismann to a S I . 5 m illio n , four-year con tract. That amount will make him the highest-paid player in the team’s history by the time he enters the last year of the contract. . . . Undefeated M ichael Spinks knocked out M urray Sutherland in the eighth round to retain his World Boxing Association light-heavy weight championship in A tlan tic City, N.J. Spinks, 25, has 14 knockouts in his 20 pro fights----- Oregon State’s Lester Conner was named to the all-tournament team after the last game o f the 14th an nual aloha Classic basketball tour nament played in H o n o lu lu , H a waii . . . . Rose is 491 hits short o f Ty Cobb’s all-time major league record of 4,191. Schwab verses Uris (Continued from page 1 cot. 3) the fire stations. This contact with the firemen encourages them and gives the a “ welcome feeling” . She feels that this is far better than selecting candidates farther down the list because they are minorities or women. Economics: “ I don’t want to balance the budge on the backs of the poor.” When the City took the aging department she asked that the City Council commit to pick up the program when federal money ended, but it did not. Employment would prevent some burglaries. Commissioner Schwab supports use of funds to create jobs and prevent crime rather than increasing the police budget. Economic develop must take place in the neighborhoods where it is needed. She supported U nion Avenue redevelopment and the new PDC economic development plan. “ I do not approve o f H C D (Housing and Com m unity Development) money going to Pioneer Square.” She also opposed many facets of the new city office building for financial reasons. Money should be spent on job training. “ I supported Charles on training programs. We should not allow the programs ot go away because the money is lost.” Police: Commissioner Schwab announced that she supported the Storrs’ Committee’s recommended police audit committee and proposed a resolution to create a committee of two council members and volunteers. A resolution, unlike an ordinace, could not be changed CROSSWORD L Inquires 8. Door fastening- Brush away 10. Assign 12. Wary (8 c o t) I X Viscous mud 14. Cunning 18. - 5. Celerity t . Jordan had submitted a similar ordinace. ’I gave Charles a letter that morning outlining the specific changes that we would have to agree to if I were to support his ordinance.” Jordan did not agree to delete the names of police officers or complainants in investigations made public. " I could not vote for the ordinance because it would open us up to suits. The reason we are in the financial situation we are in is because of the suits and settlements and I could not open us upt to more.” Housing: Housing rehabilitation is in M argaret Strachan’s bureau and she is doing a good jo b . The City needs to put in money to keep landlords from allowing housing to deteriorate. Slum landlords should be “ sent back where they come from.” Schools: Schools are not a City responsibility. “ I ’m only sorry that we can’t do anything about it.” (the current conflict between the school board and the black community). The situation that D r. Prophet is facing is “ hard enough without our second guessing him .** She added that if Prophet is willing to go with the Boise site the Council should not undermine his position. “ I t ’s too bad the board doesn’t listen to the community. I have great respect for Prophet and I wouldn’t do anything to hurt him.” The Council: “ Elected boards are not accountable to the people, I have to concede that.” 1981 Volvo DL 2 dr, 4 cyl at low miles, stk no 27711 A........ .................. $9845 1980 Volvo GL 4 dr, 4cyl, 4 spd, nice clean car, stk no 23234A ......................... $10995 1980 Toyoto Corolla W gn 4 cyl 5 spd economy plus, s tk n o 2 3 2 0 5 A ........... .................................................................................................................. $5088 1980 Datsun tt-to n P.U. 4 cyl, 5 spd, low miles, no 2 5 1 3 8 B .. . ........... $4745 1979 Honda Civic 2 dr, 4 cyl, priced to seil, no 2 41 47B ........... ...................... $3845 1978 V W Rabbit 4 cyl, nice car, n o 2 5 2 0 9 A .......................................................... $3788 1975 Volvo 242 2 Dr, 4 cyl, 4 spd, no 2 5 2 7 7 A ...................... ................................... $3475 1977 Toyota Celica 4 cyl, 5 spd "D o n 't miss this one," no 23264A . . ....$3988 1974 Volvo 145 w gn 4 cyl with low miles, no 27724............. ........................ $3845 1973 V W Bus 4 cyl 4 spd 7 pass, no 2 4 2 2 3 A .................... ..................................... $2945 S ale s tarts to d a y th ru A p ril 21 We have financing available.
