Isaac Stern recognized his tremendous potential after hearing him ten years ago in Israel at the in v ita tio n o f his renowned teacher, Ilona Feher. Since then, he has commanded the attention o f other illustrious art ists and his radio and television performances in his native Israel, heard throughout Europe, have won him a huge following. Second Cup is a rich, steaming re fill o f sweet, infectious, and funky sould from Coffee, D e-Lite/P olyG ram ’ s very own “ dream girls.” Follow ing the Chicago-based trio ’ s 1980 debut album, S lippin’ and D ip p in ’, Second Cup should quickly establish Dee Dee Bryant, Gwen Hester, and Elaine Sims as one o f the m ajor female vocal groups o f the ’80s. Produced by Tony Valor, the new album is a flavorful blend o f contemporary dance tunes, including the first single, “ Take Me Back,” and catchy, melodic R&B songs, such as the Stax-infused “ I W ouldn’ t Give You U p” and “ Love’ s A live.” Extra in gredients— the lovely ballad, “ Fantasy,” and a new version o f the classic M arvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell song, “ I f This W orld Were M ine,” sung as a duet with Leon Bryant (who released an album on De-Lite/PolyGram last year)— add an extra zest to Coffee’ s terrific brew. Dee Dee Bryant firs t became interested in music at age 15. O riginally from Columbus, Georgia, she began working with various groups, commu nity choirs, and “ singing on hallway stairs and corners.” The com m unity choir eventually broke up, and Dee Dee did backup vocal work with a local group until she was approached by her friend, Elaine Sims. From H um boldt, Tennessee, Elaine sang in a church choir, but quickly took to singing with other neighborhood kids. Her first o fficia l group, the five-girl Edquits, played neighborhood high schools, theaters, and night spots. Her next group. Portrait In Black, was progressing nicely, u n til the other three women in the group decided not to make a career in singing, at which time Elaine formed Coffee with Dee Dee and Gwen Hester. The only native o f Chicago in Coffee, Gwen, also got into music at age 15. She joined her first group, Silk, when one o f the singers took a break to have a baby. When the new mother rejoined Silk, Gwen did a solo turn be fore getting together w ith Dee Dee and Elaine. The g ro u p ’ s name came about after rehearsal one day, when the threesome were sitting around a kitchen table and noticed a can o f coffee. The name fit their image perfectly — Black, sweet, and piping hot! 2 shows nitely 8 Et 11 pm •6.00 per person L iv e a t: Geneva’s Cocktail Lounge 4 2 2 8 N . W illia m s A v e .
