The gradual graying o f clothes can be caused by many factors. “ You may not realize this dull buildup is happening,” says Tod H am ilton, M ultnom ah County Ex tension agent. Any one o f the fo l lowing situations, or a combination o f them, can cause gray laundry. •N o t using hot water or not using enough hot w ater. H ot water (at least I4 O °E .) is necessary for com plete removal o f heavy or oily soils. I f necessary, plan to do laundry when other home demands for hot water are low . For example, you may not have enough hot water to do laundry at night after fam ily members have taken baths or show ers. •Using cold water in the wash cy cle. Use o f cold water may call for pre-soaking, extra detergent, soft water, a longer wash cycle, or dis solving powdered detergents in the washer before adding clothes. In other words, extra steps and latindrV aids may be necessary when using cold water for laundry. •Using soap instead o f detergent. Use more than the recommended am ount o f detergent if the size o f the load is larger than normal, if the clothes are soiled more than usual, if the washer takes more than 16 gal lons o f water, or il the water is hard er than normal. •Overloading. This can keep the clothes from circulating freely in the washer, resulting in poor removal of soil. Always load washing machines loosely. •Im proper soaking. Soak clothes only if necessary to help remove heavy soil. Do not soak clothes longer than 20 minutes. Tw o short soaks may be better than one long soak. If clothes are soaked too long, the soil will be redeposited on them. •U sing non-phosphate deter gents. These may not get clothes clean. I f you do use a non-phos phate detergent, use the hottest water possible. Pretreat spots and stains, bleach when possible, and use soft water. Follow ing these recommenda tions can help prevent graying prob lems. “ Prevention is much less cost ly than trying to restore whiteness,” says Ardis Koester, Oregon State U niversity Extension textiles and clothing specialist. I f clothes are al ready gray, the following procedure may help get them bright again. F ill the washer w ith very hot water, adding at least twice as much laundry detergent as n o rm al. Put clothes in the washer and agitate for four minutes at regular speed. Then stop the washer and add one cup of I 3-oz. pkg cream cheese I tablespoon milk clothes four minutes, stop the wash er to complete a norm al cycle. Re peat if necessary. Although it may be impossible to remove all soil b uildup, this process can help re store some o f the original whiteness to clothes. Combine softened cream cheese, milk and orange rind, mixing until well blended. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. B R EA D 917 S.W.
