Portland Observer, January 14,1962 Page 11 k - Why the Cowboys lost or how the forty-niners won will be the topic o f conversation in many bars across the land for many months to come. This game, like the classic between M ia m a and San D iego, was tru ly one that will long be remembered. It was well played, intense and th rill ing. Glenn Dickey o f the Chronicle says, “ Coaches never learn, even a smart coach lik e Dallas* Tom Landry. The Cowboys' strategy in the closing minutes o f yesterday's N F L cham pionship game con tributed almost as much to the out come as the 49er’s determination. When the 49ers got the ball for the last tim e, almost five minutes still rem ained. Though the 49ers were 89 yards from the goal, that is plenty o f tim e to win a fo o tb all game.’’ At this point instead o f applying m axim um pressure, the Cowboys elected to go instead to the notor ious "prevent” defense. In the “ prevent’ ’ Dallas brought in six defensive backs and thus gave the No. I passing quaterback in the N F L, Joe Montana, all the time and spece to do whatever he wanted. In the “ prevent" the backs take deep drops, which leaves them ex tremely vulnerable to the run, even against a team which isn’t noted for a strong running game. M o n tan t went to work immediately with runs and short passes. Dallas* so-called prevent defense allowed H alfback Leavil E llio tt to look like Tony Dorsett reading o ff conservative runs o f six, I I and seven ycaars, something that prob ably would not have happened had Dallas stayed in their conventional defense. I t ’ s always amazed me how e f fective teams ere, all teams, w ith their two minute drills. And how in effective these prevent defense are, and yet these highly successful coaches game after game and year after year. W ith 1:15 left in the game the 49crs get to the Dallas 13 after Fred die Solomon swept the left side for 15 on a reverse. A t this point the Blazermania Sport Talk by Ron Sykes, Sports Editor fo rty-n in ers could use the entire play book, time was no longer a fac tor. The rest you know. The follow ing is a list o f reasons why San Fran- cisdo won: M ontana had plenty o f time to exploit the weakness o f the Dallas secondary and particularly Charlie Waters. C h alie You n g , tight end, had “ too ta ll" Jones in his hip pocket all day long. The soggy Held neutralized Tony Dorsett’s speed. Defensively, they kept the C ow boys from moving the ball with any consistency by pressuring the re ceivers and playing them tightly. D allas only had three sacks all day. O8U Baakatball Oregon State was simply fantastic as they ro lled S ta n fo rd 81-38 Monday night. H ow does one describe the O re gon State Beavers? T h in k about a machine that’s dirt free, well-oiled and pumping with precision and you have the 1891 -82 Orange express. Oregon State, ISth-ranked in the n atio n , pushed it ’ s record to 11-2 and to 4-0 in the conference. M ake no bones about it this game was won on defense. Lester Conner and his OSU team mates were all over the floor. In one five -m in u te span O S U forced six Stanford turnovers. And you don’t have to be a mathematician to know that that’s better than one per min ute. The C ardinals must now know how General Custer felt at the Little Big Horn. Lester C o nn er, O S U g u ard , is perhaps the best lead guard in the nation. The 6-4, O akland product put on quite a show for his Bay area fans. Conner in 38 minutes had 17 points on 8-10 shooting, and tied the school record with seven steals. The Beavers are a talented group. Is Ralph M iller building dynasty?
