Why the Cowboys lost or how the
forty-niners won will be the topic o f
conversation in many bars across
the land for many months to come.
This game, like the classic between
M ia m a and San D iego, was tru ly
one that will long be remembered. It
was well played, intense and th rill
ing. Glenn Dickey o f the Chronicle
says, “ Coaches never learn, even a
smart coach lik e Dallas* Tom
Landry. The Cowboys' strategy in
the closing minutes o f yesterday's
N F L cham pionship game con
tributed almost as much to the out
come as the 49er’s determination.
When the 49ers got the ball for
the last tim e, almost five minutes
still rem ained. Though the 49ers
were 89 yards from the goal, that is
plenty o f tim e to win a fo o tb all
game.’’
At this point instead o f applying
m axim um pressure, the Cowboys
elected to go instead to the notor
ious "prevent” defense.
In the “ prevent’ ’ Dallas brought
in six defensive backs and thus gave
the No. I passing quaterback in the

In the “ prevent" the backs take
deep drops, which leaves them ex
tremely vulnerable to the run, even
against a team which isn’t noted for
a strong running game. M o n tan t
went to work immediately with runs
and short passes.
Dallas* so-called prevent defense
allowed H alfback Leavil E llio tt to
look like Tony Dorsett reading o ff
conservative runs o f six, I I and
seven ycaars, something that prob
ably would not have happened had
Dallas stayed in their conventional
defense.
I t ’ s always amazed me how e f
fective teams ere, all teams, w ith
their two minute drills. And how in
effective these prevent defense are,
and yet these highly successful
coaches game after game and year

C h alie You n g , tight end, had

The soggy Held neutralized Tony

Defensively, they kept the C ow

Lester Conner and his OSU team

Lester C o nn er, O S U g u ard , is
