D e partment o f Defense has contracted with these universities to train teach ers fo r m ilita ry schools overseas. The six other universities are Boston U n iv e rs ity . M a ria n Jacobs, teacher at Astor Elementary School is retiring Decem ber 31, 1981 a fte r twenty years o f teaching in the P o rtlan d Public Schools. According to the Federal Collec tion C om m ission President R ea gan's C am paign C o m m ittee c o l lected 1.1 million dollars more than reported in its election report and kept funds that should have gone to the Republican Party. The Reagan campaign committee waged a four-m onth court fight to keep the report fro m being pub lished. A three-judge panel o f the U.S. Court o f Appeals in Washing ton refused recently to block its public release. The FEC concluded that no harm was done by the 1.1 m illion dollar mistake and the money does not have to be returned. Vern D uncan, State Superinten dent o f Public In stru ction , has at G overnor A tiyeh 's request recom mended a $23.95 million dollar cut in education. The cuts would elimin ate funds for the talented and gifted students and for child development specialists; also, make deep slashes in funding for community colleges and handicapped students in local school districts.
