Black Historical Project will focus
on Oregon Black Women. The re­
search findings will be published ac­
cording to M rs Betty Thompson.

Jefferson H igh School, appeared
with four other high schooi students
on the program W h at's R ig h t? ,
Channel 2, December 13. Race rela­
tions in the public high schools was
the topic discussed. Dr. Jerry Swice-
good, host for the program, did not
deal with ways to improve race rela­
tions in the high schools. A great
opportunity— missed!

Oregon State University is one o f
seven institutions to provide train ­
ing for teachers who work outside
o f the United States. The U .S . D e­
partment o f Defense has contracted
with these universities to train teach­
ers fo r m ilita ry schools overseas.
The six other universities are Boston
U n iv e rs ity . George W ashington
University, Florida State University,
the University o f Houston, M ic h i­
gan State University and the Univer­
sity o f Southern California.

According to m icrobiologists at
Boston University’s School o f M edi­
cine, iron deficiency may cause gas­
tric u lceration and c o n trib u te to
stomach cancer.
John Craig, landscaper, recently
toured several m ajor cities in China
with a group involved in h o rticu l­
ture, zoology and related fields.
They observed the production skills
o f Chinese workers in various indus­

A third property tax limitation in­
itiative has been filed by Ray P h il­
lips, W illiam Jolly, Alva Moser, and
Orvin Stanwood. The lim itation in­
itia tiv e is one per cent. P etitions
must receive 72,891 signatures by
July 2, 1981.
M rs. M a ria n Jacobs, teacher at
Astor Elementary School is retiring
Decem ber 31, 1981 a fte r twenty
years o f teaching in the P o rtlan d
Public Schools.
According to the Federal Collec­
tion C om m ission President R ea­
gan's C am paign C o m m ittee c o l­
lected 1.1 million dollars more than
reported in its election report and
kept funds that should have gone to
the Republican Party.
The Reagan campaign committee
waged a four-m onth court fight to
keep the report fro m being pub­
lished. A three-judge panel o f the
U.S. Court o f Appeals in Washing­
ton refused recently to block its
public release.
The FEC concluded that no harm
was done by the 1.1 m illion dollar
mistake and the money does not
have to be returned.
Vern D uncan, State Superinten­
dent o f Public In stru ction , has at
G overnor A tiyeh 's request recom­
mended a $23.95 million dollar cut
in education. The cuts would elimin­
ate funds for the talented and gifted
students and for child development
specialists; also, make deep slashes
in funding for community colleges
and handicapped students in local
school districts.
