W hile attending a Pan A fr i can conference on the " S ta te o f the R ace" being held in C a lifo rn ia , ih e was in tro d u ced to the " B la c k H e brew N a tio n " (som etim es referred to as " th e n a tio n "). T o d a y , C arolyn and her Il-y e a r - o ld son B ritt live in Israel and are among the "O rig in a l H ebrew Israel ite N a tio n o f J e ru s a le m ." G x h le - nah, which is her H ebrew name, left P o rtla n d in A p ril o f this year w ith her son A s h u la ( B r i t t ) to v is it Is rael. A t that tim e she had no plans to rem ain in Israel. A fte r traveling both n ationally and in ternationally she began to see that "B lack People are m oving backwards econom ical ly, p o litic a lly , and s p iritu a lly ." She went on to say th at a fte r tw o years o f corresponding with the " N a tio n ” she went to Israel. " B la c k s fro m A m e ric a are the m ost b e w ild e re d an d lost o f a ll. Black Americans are in worse shape th an th e p eop le fro m the Islan ds, S ou th A m e ric a and A fr ic a . She cited the A tla n ta child killings as a fo rm o f g e n o c id e an d th is is seen as " o n ly a b e g in n in g ." She is convinced that the " N a t io n " is on the right track and that m ore Black A m erican s w o u ld leave the U n ite d States given a chance. T h e m an can h ave more than one w ife at a tim e but the wom en can have o n ly one husband and th is is kn o w n as " T h e D iv in e M a rria g e .” G a h le n a h said th a t she has n o t "g o tte n ready fo r the ‘ D ivin e M a r riage’ ” but there were no other as pects o f the life style that were unac cep tab le to her.
