Portland Observer, November 25,1961 Track talk by Mike Cusorielll A pair o f tw o-year-old stakes events and Rainier Binocular Week end headline the upcoming Thanks giving weekend o f racing at P ort land Meadows. The Janet Wineberg Futurity, to be run Saturday, November 28, pits the cream o f the two-yeur-old Ore gon-bred filly crop. The Bill Wine berg Futurity, which will be renewed fo r the tenth time on Sunday, November 29, features the top two- year-old Oregon-bred colts and geldings. Such standouts as Lan- dauer, Lighthouse Jim and Future Fox are expected to compete. Landauer is coming o f f o f two Portland Meadows allowance vic tories at the Wineberg distance o f six furlongs. In his victory on Sun day, November I, the Dan Markle- trained gelding covered the distance in 1:11.3, the fastest six furlong clocking by a two-year-old this sea son. Future Fox has bankrolled $7,515 in his six life tim e starts. In the $15,375 O .T.B.A. Sales Stakes here October 31, Future Fox was the run ner up behind Washington-bred Not Now. Lighthouse Jim has finished third in his only two starts. In the O .T.B.A. Sales Stakes, Lighthouse Jim finished behind Not Now and Future Fox, and in the $R,5(XI-added Beaver State Handicap the Howard Belvoir-trained colt ran behind the highly-regarded H i Yu L ulu and C hipO 'Lark. Rainier Binocular Weekend will offer quality Bushnell and Zeiss bi noculars and sportsglasses to Port land Meadows patrons at up to 40 per cent o ff the regular retail price. Horse racing enthusiasts will be able to purchase the binoculars at the track for their own personal use o f have them shipped to friends and relatives as Christmas g ifts via United Parcel Service. The victory boosted the Oregon- bred’ s career earn ings to $38,245, o f which $30,699 has been earned this year. Deception Decision, the N.E. (Nub) Norton-trained son o f Skin Head and You Guess, is per haps best known for his length and a h a lf victory over Son o f thunder- hawk in the 1981 Oregon Derby. In other developments, veteran conditioner Bill Tollett solidified his lead in the trainer standings with a double on Sunday, giving him a 6-4 lead over second place Bud Klokstad. In Sunday’ s n in th and feature race, Tollett’s ace sprinter My Run away scored an easy w ire-to-w ire two length victory over Poppy Vee in 1:11.2. Greg Swaim still holds down the top spot in the jockey standings. With 10 wins in 59 mounts, Swaim holds a 10-8 lead over Jody David son and Gary Stevens. W e e k 's b e e t p e y o f f s Win— In winning Saturday’ s sixth race, Moonshiner (ridden by Doug Moore) lit up the tote board for a $106.80 win payoff. Piace and show— E xciting Rhythm, guided to his second place finish by jockey Wayne Shaw, re turned a staggering $85.20 place payoff in Friday’ s seventh race. The five-year-old daughter o f Flying Lark also returned the weekend's most lucrative show payoff, $16.60. Trifecla—In Sunday’ s fifth race. Sails Ahoy (ridden by Ralph Gar cia), L ittle Punk and H urricand W illie teamed up fo r the week’ s largest trifecla payoff, $5,528. Quineila Exciting Rhythm and 21-to-l shot Wendy Sue teamed up for the week’ s best quineila payoff, $765.20, in Friday’ s seventh race. Sky” Bradley went on to try out for the interna tionally known Athletes in Action basketball team. U n fo rtu n a te ly, they needed a guard so he was cut from the squad. Garry is now prac ticing for the spring try-out with the pros and coaches the 12- to 14-year- olds for the Moore Street Center. Larry Collins also played basket ball for PCC fo r two years. He is presently co-partners in Clothes Un lim ited with B illie H o lt. He con tinues to play basketball as a hobbie and as a means o f keeping in shape. Also playing fo r The Moore Street Community Center Basket ball Team are Jessie Collins, Hillary Kelly, Bruce Morales, Marvin Jen nings, Percy Davis, Melvin Booker, Ricky O verton, James D ixon, Danny Wilson, Carey Larkin, and Jay Craig. Teams taking part in the double elim ination tournament are made up o f young adults representing churches as far away as Southern California. A total o f 15 games will be played, with the tournament run ning from 9:30 a m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Awards Banquet, to be held in the Moore Street Com m unity Center w ill immediately follow the final game. Wille Brock, former De troit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs piayer will be the guest speaker. Spectators arc invited to watch the tournam ent.
