Here’ s what two rival coaches said about Oregon Football 1 9 8 1 .... T e rry D onahue: “ I know first hand how good Oregon is. The con ference championship might be won by any number o f schools----- The Oregon Ducks w ill be right in the hunt. They have a great defensive team and are capable o f shooting anyone down. Their offense will be explosive.” In reality the offense hasn’ t shown all year and the Ducks are a sorrowful 1-10. Don James, University o f Wash ington: " F o r a strong team you need a strong p ro g ram , one that takes good athletes and makes them better. Rich Brooks and his s ta ff have done th a t. . . at least as well or better than any team in the league. The Ducks have a great defense and the best group o f running backs in the league." In actuality the defense held to gether the first h a lf o f the season but has now joined the offense in the realm o f ineptness. Oregon, this year, has c ertain ly foo led the ex perts. The so-called experts picked them to challenge seriously for the Rose Bowl. The Ducks are playing OSU this week in the "cru m m y game o f the week.” ‘ ‘E nuff” said. I f you’ ve earned the name, then whv not play the game. W ith that slogan in m ind the San A n to n io "Bruise brothers” literally tore the Blazers apart last Sunday night. Portland was outrebounded by 30 for the game but still managed to hang on to a narrow 9-point h a lf tim e lead at 6 7 -5 8 , but one could easily see that it was only a matter o f time until the injury-riddled Blazers would succumb to the constant bat tering being adm inistered by the now famous "Bruise brothers.” A pparently referees Joe Gushue and Jake O ’ Donnell were aware o f the Spurs’ reputation and decided that they would let them live up to it. Buo on this night being physical was the last thing Portland needed. P o rtla n d should get a victory Tuesday night when the young New Jersey Nets come to town. They will then have five days to rest before travelling to Seattle for a date Wed nesday night against the still-strug gling Super Sonics. C a lv in N att continued his strong play, although for some strange reason Calvin only had fo u r attem pts fro m the field during the first h alf. And the way M r. H ow ever, Jack Ramsay, should have tested the w ater by calling N a tt’s number more often because Calvin can surely hang with the big ger fellows. The book is still out on Blazer back-up center Peter Gudmundssen, the 7-2 giant out o f U niversity o f Washington. He can do none o f the things expected o f a pro basketball player. He can’t run, jumps, shoot or pass. W hat’s left? Can’t help but wonder what Ram say sees in him, “ Peter Gudmunds sen is going to be a player in this league,” said Ramsay. Yes, Jack, and the Earth is flat The moon is made o f green cheese and all Hades will freeze over before that happens. H ow Coach Ramsay could release 6-11, Tom Barker in favo r o f G udm undssen is sim ply mind-boggling. Portland’s injury list is now ready to lead the league. At this early date the list is growing steadily. Kermit W ashing to n was the firs t to fa ll. Then came Kevin Kunnert and now Kelvin Ransey. Injuries is one cate gory Portland seems to have a lock on. Where w ill Cards con tro versial Templeton play ball? The C hicago Cards have shown interest in the switch-hitting short stop but it seems now that the St. Louis C ardinals a ren ’ t so eager to give him up. W hitey H erzog, the most active p artic ip a n t at last D ecem ber’ s w in ter meetings in D a lla s , is ru mored to be w arm ing up fo r next months’ s session in Flo rid a by lis tening to offers for his brilliant but enigmatic shortstop, Garry Temple ton. The Cubs so far have shown the hottest interest. T em p leto n was fire d and sus pended last year when he allegedly made obscene gestures to some St. Louis fans. He later apologized and rejoined the team G arry Templeton is easily the best shortstop in the league when he wants to be and when he behaves. He has the range o f M aury Wills and the bat o f E rn ie Banks. Plus he’ s a switch hitter with the ability to hit .300 from each side. The Dodgers are particularly in terested in Tem pleton and L .A . is where the shortstop would like to play. Qu/z.- The first N BA A ll-Star game was held in 1951 at Boston Garden.
