DICK BOGLE There are lo t* o f reasons why I think au th or David H alberstam 's latest b oo k, The Breaks o f the Game, is the Tinesl book I ’ ve ever read about basketball and in p a r ticular pro basketball. The book is an e xam in atio n o f professional basketball and how it has changed because o f two primary reasons: the Black dominance o f the game and television. Halberstam uses the 1979 80 edi tion o f the Portland Trailblazers as the example o f w h at’ s good about the game and what can go wrong a f ter reaching the pinnacle o f a cham pionship only three years before. There are heroes, v illain s and clowns. How ever, only the heroes are one-dim ensional. A utho r H a l berstam portrays even those the reader would suspect o f the <reatcst villainy in an even-handed i inner. I must admit I raced through the book with great excitement because I frequently talked with Halberstam during his many visits to Portland while he was researching the book. M y a n tic ip a tio n grew w ith each passing month waiting for its publi cation. Because I know so many o f the players I wanted to check how the author presented them for mass consumption. I plan to read it a sec ond time at a more leisurely pace, this tim e searching for flaws and personality m is in te rp re ta tio n . I doubt however that I will find any significant such mistakes. As the book develops, the story o f three men— Paul Silas, Lennie W il ing pains o f the two which brings in to great clarity the understanding o f why each man is the way he is. W ilkins is the player chosen to il lustrate the then and now o f the N B A — the then being a basically white league and what a Black play er had to do in o rd er to survive. Very g ra p h ic a lly it also describes what was done to Lennie both as a player and then later on as a coach in a league fin a lly dom in ated by Black players. Luke is chosen as the main T ra il blazer in the book. It delves in to what the au th or felt were L uke's feelings, sometimes a m b iv a le n t, to w ard his team m ate and close triend Bill Walton and even in some cases his closest friend on that team, Lionel Hollins. The b o o k ’s strong character de velopment o f these men came not kins and Maurice Silas— seems to be the main thread o f continuity. In the cases o f Wilkins and Lucas, the author goes back to the c h ild hood o f each to describe the grow- only from extensive interviews with them but seemingly word for word re-capilulalions o f conversations be tween only the players and o f course interviews with their friends in and out o f the league. I read one review in which the re viewer slated Halberstam cast every thing in Black and W hile terms and faulted him for doing so. I felt his honest confrontation with the issue o f race, in perhaps the most stress ful o f all professional sports, is one major reason for this book being so right on the mark. F orm er T ra ilb la z e r and now broadcaster Steve Jones is quoted lib e ra lly and he tells perhaps the funnies! story in the book. II deal, with Marvin "B ad News” Barnes during his days with the St. Louis Spirits in the A .B .A . For at least one ;a r, Jones, Lucas and New» were teammates there. Jones re la te * the tim e the team was to leave New York for a game in Virginia. The Spirits coach tried in vain several times to wake the late- sleeping Barnes so he could catch the learn flight for the next game. It was all to no avail. Barnes missed the flight. When he finally did arise, he chartered a private plane at a cost to him o f SI ,300 to gel to Virginia. He arrived in the locker room wear ing the biggest "p im p ” hat ever and a ten-thousand-dollar fur coat. His first words were something lik e , " H a v e no fear. News is here.” He then pulled o ff the expensive fur re vealing his full Si. Louis Spirits uni form , all the while munching on a Big Mac and french fries. Barnes d id n ’ t s art the game but when he got in , he scored 40 odd points and hauleu down 23 re bounds. Barnes perhaps was the PORTLAND OBSERVER- FINDER SENIOR MANUFACTURING ENGINEER Be A Winner!
