Portland Ob—rver, November 5, 1981 Page 7 Remove moss quickly When the wet fall weather begins, moss may soon begin to appear on roofs, patios, sidewalks and steps, especially in western Oregon. “ Moss can shorten the life span o f a ro o f if not brought under con tro l,” says Ray M cN eilan , Oregon State U n ive rs ity Extension home gardening agent. “ It can also create slippery surfaces on patios and w alkw ays, where it grows along with algae and Ziehens.” Moss thrives in dam p, shaded locations. I t ’ s often found on the north slopes o f roofs, or in places shaded by overhanging trees. It fre quently builds up on little used pa tios and walkways that remain wet for extended periods. According to M cN eilan, the first step in moss con tro l is to scrape away as much o f it as possible. This may not be practical on some ro o f surfaces. Several alternatives are available to keep the moss from re turning? Pork Barley C asserole m akes m ain dish fo r a full m eal. Commercial moss sprays are most effective against moss when it is ac tively growing in the rainy season. A p p ly the spray when rain is not likely for several days, if possible. Sprays containing zinc sulfate m onohydrate are readily available for home use and can safely be used around plants. The chemical that remains on the treated area will prevent rapid regrowth o f moss. Contrary to popular belief, table salt isn’t very effective in controlling moss and does have harmful side ef fects, according to McNeilan. Salt is corrosive to metals and can cause harm to plants.
