Remove moss quickly
When the wet fall weather begins,
moss may soon begin to appear on
roofs, patios, sidewalks and steps,
especially in western Oregon.
“ Moss can shorten the life span
o f a ro o f if not brought under con
tro l,” says Ray M cN eilan , Oregon
State U n ive rs ity Extension home
gardening agent. “ It can also create
slippery surfaces on patios and
w alkw ays, where it grows along
with algae and Ziehens.”
Moss thrives in dam p, shaded
locations. I t ’ s often found on the
north slopes o f roofs, or in places
shaded by overhanging trees. It fre
quently builds up on little used pa
tios and walkways that remain wet
for extended periods.
According to M cN eilan, the first
step in moss con tro l is to scrape
away as much o f it as possible. This
may not be practical on some ro o f
surfaces. Several alternatives are
available to keep the moss from re
turning?

Contrary to popular belief, table
salt isn’t very effective in controlling
moss and does have harmful side ef
fects, according to McNeilan. Salt is
corrosive to metals and can cause
harm to plants.
