Program offers youth services (Continued fro m pafte / column 3) supervision for community events and cleaning up after those events are over. "Since the program began, more than 100 youths have completed the program and better than 90 percent were successful,” she said. "M ost o f the young people who are referred are experiencing some kind o f school difficulty." In search o f ways to teach and show youth the folly o f getting in trouble with the law, Mayfield said "W e wanted to bring in people who were positive role models, so we brought in the Northwest Ex offender Association as role models. They (ex-offenders) en courage the young people to stay in school, to give something back to the community,” she said. “ We are also trying to work with the Uhuru Cultural Club (the Black inmate cultural club at the Oregon State Penitentiary) in the same way.” M ayfield said the program is in need of many things: vans or a large bus to transport the youngsters, more counselors and the bottom line is, “ We need more money.” "A s programs are cut we will be called upon more and m ore,” she said. “ We need jobs for the youngsters. We have 80 to 90 youngsters who are waiting for em ployment.” One of the things they are looking into is “ Youth-run businesses” — business enterprises that youth can operate solely and independent o f adults. A workshop is scheduled for November on “ youth-run businesses” that will bring in com munity business people to aid and assist the youth in making selections for possible business enterprises. Many other things are being done out at the Northeast facility such as the sponsorship o f the Stars and Stripes D rill team which has up coming performance dates with the Trailblazers basketball team in Por tland and the Seahawks football team in Seattle. Recently the cent cr purchased approxim ately 80 books from the Talking Drum Book Store to set up a reading center that will encourage the youth to think. Many other things are in the plan ning stage that will facilitate the learning experience. “ There are some extremely g if ted, talented Black youth who need the support o f the com munity so they can become productive citizens— that is, productive citizens anywhere,” Mayfield said. “ Even though all o f the five Youth Programs have small operating budgets— they are quality services.” 13
