Before that I used to do a lot o f things with the Detroit musicians. I ’m from Detroit. “ When bebop first came on the scene with Charlie Parker and Dizzy and the guys, I was a fan, a bebopper all the way. I had the walk, the talk, the attitude, the whole thing. I thought the music was the greatest. I was called Betty Bebop. Listen, I was with it.’ ’ Ms. Carter is one o f the finest remaining jazz singers. Jazz singers are linked by an instrumental approach to music; great jazz singers improvise as a horn might, often using the lyrics as vehicles to transport their rhythmic fantacies. Their voices approach the tonal qualities o f horns. The develop ment o f jazz vocal styles is closely related to the dominance o f certain in struments — saxaphone, trumpet, etc. Betty Carter’ s style hasn’ t changed much over the years — she brings bebop’s harmonic conceptions to her choice o f melodic material. She has a fine voice, with a kind o f smokey, husky sound. She improvises, re-creates each song. Every son, no matter how familiar, is a surprise because of her daring and adventurous interpretations. Her most astonishing quality is her unequalled rhythmic imagination. For many years Better Carter was nearly forgotten, although she kept a steady series o f club engagements. No more. Recently she has become a media event, drawing huge crowds throught the US and Europe. Profiles in Time and Newsweek, a Public Broadcasting System TV special, and a suc cessful tour o f Poland have brought her the renewed attention that she well deserves. His mother died young so his father sent him to be raised by his grandmother on the Stovall plantation near Clarksdale. It was she who tagged him with his name. “ She used to say I ’d sneak out and play in the mud when I was little so she started calling me Muddy. The kids added Waters, it was a sling (meaning slang) name and it just stuck ” Since the release o f I'm Ready, Muddy Waters has been touring exten sively. Throughout 1978, he criss-crossed the United States before con cluding the year in Europe opening a large hall tour for Eric Clapton, another great derivative blues guitarist who owes an inspirational debt to Muddy and Robert Johnson. Muddy’ s newest release for Blue Sky is an entirely live recording, cap turing Muddy at his best. Recorded on his 1977 and 1978 national tours (in Detroit at the Masonic Temple in 1977 and in Chicago at Harry Hopes’ in 1978), Muddy Mississippi" Waters Live (JZ35712) contains versions of his most exciting and enduring songs, among them one o f M uddy’ s favorites by another blues master. Sonny Boy Williamson’s "Nine Below Z ero" and a familiar hit he co-wrote with Bo Didlcy and Mel London, "Mannish Boy. "T hroughout the album, Muddy is assisted by a stellar group o f blues players including James Cotton, Water’ s men Perkins, Smith, Margolin, Portnoy, Luther Johnson and Calvin Jones as well as the album’ s producer Johnny Winter. In the Spring o f 1979, Muddy again joined Eric Clapton for a 47 city tour o f the United States. Beginning in Tucson in March, the tour encom passed Muddy’ s 64th birthday celebration held in Springfield, Missouri (A p ril 4) and his marriage to Marva Jean Brooks on her 25th birthday (June 5). Their weeding preceded the Chicago Stadium date where Muddy was joined by ( lapton, Johnny Winter and Willie Dixon for a very special encore o f Got My M ojo Working. " When asked if he ever gets tired of so much travelling, he says, “ Sure I get tired man, but I love the road. It’ s the chance to get out and see all my people. People all over the world say, Muddy W aters w ill appear at Ysighbors of Woodcraft on Aug who is this Muddy Waters?...and as long as I feel good and stay healthy, I ’ m gonna keep out there and give ’em a look.
