Portland Observar April 30.1981 Paga 6 r Broadcasting career choice f ° r P C C student By Nathaniel Scott The th rill o f victory comes to many in different shapes, sizes and colors, and while the cap and gown w ill be a dominant factor this June, fo r some, it is the halfway point o f a race yet to be run. Jesse H a ll, a 21 year old A ir Force veteran from H u g o , O a k - lahoma, will graduate from Port land Community College with a degree in Radio-TV Broad casting. Hall resides with his family and when time perm its, enjoys traveling, swimming, basket and fo o tb a ll, as ways o f unwinding from the grim task o f studying. And as one would expect, he speaks as one o f the newly coined “ C om m unicators." “ Since we are living in 1981, Blacks should realize the importance o f unity. I t ’ s time that we all come together as people to create the ultim ate progress in the w orld today. “ I think the philosophy in the homes o f many Black people should be one o f utmost concern, guidance, and a positive reflec tio n on life . The philosophy should be taught to our young Black children, instilled in them, so they w ill become positive producers in our w orld (Black world) and lead a successful life for themselves, which in turn will improve our society,” he said. Union Avenue is a focal point and topic fo r conversation fo r many in the Black com m unity, and Hall, a “ communicator" has his views. “ I think it’s good and 1 wonder why it took so long to upgrade that strip because i t ’ s such an im portant transistional highway to 1-5 and the N o rth ,” he continued. H a ll contends that PCC’ s Radio-TV Broadcasting program is basically good and prepares one for occupation in the field, but “ The problem (Blacks) is being accepted by a station -- or getting in the door. A person should be accepted on their merits - not to fill a quota. But if it takes a quota to get minorities a position, then the quota is accep table.” The uncertainty o f the nation’ s economy; the uncertainty o f Reagan’ s proposed cuts; Atyieh’ s proposed tax increases; and the very real p o ssibility o f doing something fo r the Black com munity, prompted Hall to say: “ I plan to enter the U niversity o f Oregon this fall, but, now that I have completed a two year broad casting program 1 have a lot o f skills to use effectively in the form o f com m unication. This summer, I w ould like to put together a docum entary on Blacks in Portland, and let it be used as a tool o f teaching for the com m unity, so the com m unity can and would have its own survey takers, record its own Dr. Donald Cheek, author o f "Assert iver Black, Puzzled White” will be in the Portland area on May 29th and 30th to do a seminar developed by CC and Associates to address the need for new perspec tives in Assertive T raining and its application to those w ith Black Multi-cultural clientele. Cheek, an a u th o rity in human relations, is currently a counselor and professor o f psychology at C a lifo rn ia , Polytechnic State U niversity, San Luis Obispo. His assertiveness tra in in g program , designed specifically for Blacks, is a technique for developing skills in ef fective self-expression. Dr. Cheek defines assertiveness as being open, honest and direct w ithout the intention o f putting anybody down, while being aggres sive is to be open, honest and direct w ith the intention o f put down. A passive person does not verbalize how he or she really feels. Instead they hide their true feelings. Cheek believes that a person has only three choices: either be passive, assertive or aggressive. A ccording to Cheek, the more tact you have, the more stress you are lik e ly to have. He m aintains stress is what keeps us from doing what we really want to do. It keeps us from natural spontaneous ex pression. And expression is what releases stress. So the less we ver balize our true feelings, the more stress our bodies have to deal with. “ We can’ t a ffo rd to only say what we want to say when we get angry. I t ’ s killin g us! Blacks have the highest rate o f hypertension than all other groups o f people in this country. We have the highest cancer rate. Kidney disease is five times higher than whites. And the suicide rate is going u p ," he war ned. D r. And secondly, it gives you the technique to deal effectively with racism. The most effective weapons we have against racism is group solidarity and assertiveness,” he continued. However, D r. Cheek, who describes himself as a street nigger from Harlem and part Ph.D from w hite education, holds to the position that to be effective in dealing with the white power struc ture we must learn to understand the d istinct difference between the tra d itio n a l body o f knowledge, white o rie n ta tio n , and the non- tra d itio n a l body o f knowledge, Black orientation.
