It was changed to "Washington” 2 years after his death. • Although A rgentina's name means "La nd of Silver," there is actually very little silver in Argentina. It was misnamed by explorers who thought they saw silver there. Gun purchasing increase (Please turn to Page 6 col 3) Q u ite a d iffe re n t view o f self- defense is held by Terry Dobson, who is writing a book to be titled •‘Safe and A live.” It is based in part on principles derived from the mar tia l art o f A ik id o , which he has studied and taught for many years. Dobson turns around the gun ad vocate’ s favorite argument, which is th at “ guns do not k ill people, people kill people.” that is so, he agrees. Consequently, self-defense should be a matter o f people dealing with people rather than a matter o f guns. T h e p o s s e ss io n o f g u n s • r e in - forces p a ra n o ia ,” says D obson. “ Don’t worry about the increase of guns -- just be alert to danger,” he advises. " I f you are faced with a gun, don’t resist it.” T he fo rm o f self-defense that Dobson teaches requires a person under attack to seek to protect not himself but his attacker -- from the harm that would come to the a t tacker from commission o f the act. The by-product is self-protection. Instead o f being based on resistance, this process calls for an acceptance o f the on-coming force, a blending with it and its redirection in such a way that no injury occurs. Says Dobson: " N o gun law will stop a person who is determined to lay down his life to kill somebody.” H ow ever, he holds, m any deaths could be avoided by stemming the proliferation o f handguns. Though gun control advocates are not optim istic about chances for federal legislation in the coming Reagan years, Orasin notes: " N o one is safe in this country. The ran domness o f killing is increasing and it has spread nationwide. The next ad m in is tra tio n have to face that somehow."
