Career Day success Herb Caw thorne presents a token of appreciation to Vernon C hat man. w ho arranges the annual Career Day. The P ortland Urban League’ s Career Awareness Day was held this past weekend on November 8, 1980, and turned out extremely successful. The Urban League has sponsored the Career Awareness Day for the past six years, mainly for minority high school students. Through the years, the ideas have been expanded and improved by holding various workshops to answer p a rticu la r questions, any o f the students may ask. The Awareness Day is designed to provide an overview of the world o f work, ideas of the skills required for various job catagories, and any ad d itio n a l in fo rm a tio n in areas o f specific interest to the student. There were representatives from various local business, education, and government levels to inform students on expectations, pre parations, and benefits o f their companies. The Urban League is the prime sponsor o f the Career Awareness Day along w ith fundings from private companies; some par ticip a tin g in the program . The program is planned yearly, one month after the previous Career High school students register for Career D a y . Day, to improve on the mistakes from past programs. Vern C hatm an, one o f the Executive Directors o f the Urban League, sees the fu tu re o f the Career Awareness Day as promising, but he feels it is critical fo r the co n tin u a tio n o f the Justice reports racial incidents increase The Com m unity Relations Ser vice (CRS) o f the Department o f Justice responded to 1,431 alerts to racial disputes or racial incidents during Fiscal Year 1980, a 6.6. per cent increase over Fiscal Year 1979. CRS Director Gilbert G. Pompa said today that o f the 1,431 alerts, the CRS helped to settle 923 cases, carried over 261 into Fiscal Year 1981, which began October 1, 1980; and turned away 214 as lacking suf ficient volatility to warrant remov ing staff from potentially more ex plosive problems. CRS defines a case as flaring con flict o f the type that occured in such places as Miami, Florida; Nampa, Idaho; F lint, Michigan; W ichita, Kansas; and Wrightsville, Georgia, or a dispute or disagreement with real potential for erupting into open conflict or violence. M r. Pompa said that cases showing the fastest growth rate were those related to minority allegations of police use o f excessive force, Ku Kian Kian activities, and the influx o f Indochinese resettlements. CRS logged 249 cases alleging police use of excessive force during Fiscal Year 1980, a 92.8 percent in crease over the previous year. Sixty- three percent of the cases stemmed from Blacks’ complaints, 32 from Hispanics, and four percent from American Indians. There were 68 cases related to Kian activities and 32 to In dochinese refugee resettlements, in creases o f 55 percent and 540 per cent, respectively. The Kian activity occured across the nation, but the cases were mainlv in the Southeast with cross burnings, armed rallies countering m inority protesters, firebombings, challenges to police, and general harassment o f Blacks and Hispanics precipitating the trouble. The Indochinese refugee resettle ment were mostly in the Southwest and over housing, jobs, and shrimp- ing issues._________________________ Mr. Pompa said that requests for help in disputes by citizens, gover nors, and other officials o f public and private agencies and organi sations indicate a growing interest in the emerging fie ld o f racial and ethnic dispute resolution. He said that Federal d istrict judges increasingly are calling on CRS to mediate, as an alternative to litigation, in certain civil rights cases and to help to peacefully implement school desegreation orders. Among CRS’ present efforts is one o f conciliating the mounting racial tensions resulting from the rash o f killings of Blacks in Atlanta, B u ffa lo , and a number o f other cities. RIPPED OFF!
