African photos on exhibit An exhibition o f photographs, title d “ East A fric a — Photo S a fa ri," w ill be at the Oregon Museum o f Science and Industry Sept. 5 through O ct. 6. The exhibition w ill consist o f some 50 color and Black-and-w hite photographs featuring the peoples and wildlife of East Africa. The work o f Lynda Falkenstein, the photographs were shot during the fall o f 1979 in Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles Islands, which lie 1,000 miles o ff the coast o f Africa in the Indian Ocean. "T h e show isn ’ t an A frica n tra ve lo g u e ," says photographer Falkenstein. "1 haven', tried to represent Africa from A to Z; what I have done, I hope, is to capture something o f the essence o f the East African experience." Subject matter ranges from colorfully robed Masai and Samburu tribesmen to lions, cheetahs and leopard caught cavor ting, or jus, relaxing, in the wild. Falkenstein, who received her Ph.D from Stanford University, is an associate professor of education at Portland State University. For several years, she has combined a busy academic career w ith photography. Having long enter tained a special affection for Africa, she plans to return there soon after the show to make additions to her already impressive photographic profile o f the continent. The photo show will be on display in O M SI’ s east exhibit hall. There w ill be an ad d itio n a l charge fo r viewing the exhibition , after the regular Museum admission. Black Entertainment Television is a retrospective o f Black films from the 193O’ s to the 1980’ s; documen taries, sports and special entertain ment (including concerts o f famous Black stars), classical and contem- pory films. On Saturday August 30, 1980 there will be a showing o f “ Johnny Tough" a contemporary film depic ting the life struggles o f a Black youth. Everyone is urged to attend. Admission is free. The showing will begin at 1:30p.m. and at 3:30 p.m. The second showing w ill begin at 4:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. The King Neighborhood Facility is located at 4815 N.E. 7th Avenue.
