Besides they help stretch the food budget. Here are two suggestions for fam ily supper main dishes to help you celebrate N ational M acaroni Week proclaim ed by the pasta products people. German Noodle- Sausage Casserole is a tasty com bination that w ill appeal to those who like food with a foreign flavor. Take popular egg noodles, brown and serve sausages, celery soup, some sauerkraut and shredded cheese(the packaged kind simplifies preparation). M ix them with a bit o f caraway seed and that’ s it. Put these together the night before or in the morning; then refrigerate. On one o f the busy afternoons when you’ re in a hurry, just pop it in and dinner's ready in half an hour. Another time try Easy Frankfur ter-Noodle Bake. It w ill turn out to be one o f the fam ily’s most popular meals, and it doesn’t cost a fortune. Keep not only egg noodles, but macaroni and spaghetti on hand for variety, convenience, economy and ease o f cooking. Glass storage bot tles with corks come in all sizes and shapes to provide a ttra ctive safekeeping for the pasta. Enjoy! EASY FRANKFURTER NOODLE BAKE Gradually add 6 ounces medium egg noodles (about 3 cups) and I tablespoon salt to 3 quarts rapidly boiling water so that water continues to boil. Cook uncovered, stirring oc casionally, u n til tender. D rain in colander. Brown 1 pound frankfur ters and I small onion in 2 tablespoons butter or margarine un til tender. Combine with noodles, 1 can (10 ’4 oz.) condensed tomato soup, !4 cup m ilk and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire in 1 'A quart buttered casserole. Top with 14 cup buttered bread crumbs. Bake in a 350° oven 30 minutes. Makes four to six ser vings. F ran kfu rter noodle bake saves m oney and tim e, yet offers a delicious fam ily m eal. Concordia gathers food for poor A busy housew ife rolls bread for the fam ily dinner. Bake a sweet or savory bread “ Two for the price o f one” is a bargin in any woman’ s book. And for the busy home baker, the two-in- one yeast recipes are the pratical an swer to the problem o f limited time: two different breads in the time it takes to prepare a single loaf. The secret is in the dough-in this case, a basic white dough prepared by the foolproof “ no-dissolve” method. A simple o n io n -d ill fillin g makes a savory dinner bread, while a cream cheese and coconut filling and con fectioners’ sugar frosting transform the braided loaf into a sweet treat for breakfast, a fte rn o o n coffee or dessert. Their impressive looks to the con trary, Sweet or Savory Braids are easy to prepare by the new rapidmix method developed by the test k it chens o f Fleischm ann’ s Yeast. It does away with the step o f dissolving yeast in warm water by adding it, undissolved, to the dry ingredients. Initial beating is done with an elec tric mixer to facilitate mixing and make doughs lighter and easier to handle. SWEET OR SAVORY BRAID 6'/2 to 1'A cups unsifted Hour 3 tablespoons sugar 2'A teaspoons salt 1 package o f active dry yeast 1 cup milk 1 cup water 6 tablespoons margarine In large bowl thoroughly mix 2 cups llour, sugar, salt and undissolved ac tive dry yeast. Combine m ilk, water and margarine in saucepan. Heat slow ly u n til liq u id s are very warm (120F.- 130F.). Margarine does not need to m elt. G rad ua lly add to dry ingredients and beat 2 minutes at m edium speed o f electric m ixer, scraping bowl occasionally. Add 1 cup flo u r. Beat at high speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in enough additional flo u r to make a soft dough. Turn out onto ligh tly floured board; knead u ntil smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover; let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk, about 1!4 hours. Punch dough down and turn out onto lightly floured board. Divide dough in half. Roll one half into a 12-inch square. Cut into 3 equal strips. Spread strips w ith h a lf o f either O nion-Dill filling (follows) or coconut fillin g (follows) to within 'A- inch o f each edge. Pinch seams tig h tly to seal fo rm in g fille d “ ropes.” Braid ropes together; place on greased baking sheet. Repeat with remaining half o f dough. Cover; let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk, about I hour. I f using O n io n -D ill fillin g , brush braids w ith I egg beaten w ith 1 tablespoon water and sprinkle generously with sesame seeds. Bake in a hot oven (4(X)F) for 25 minutes, or until done. Remove from baking sheets and place on wire racks to cool. I f using coconut filling, frost cooled cake w ith co nfe ction e rs’ sugar frosting. Make 2 braids. Onion D ill Filling: Saute 1(4 cups finely chopped onion and 1 teaspoon dill weed in 1 tablespoon margarine just u n til onion is transparent. Remove from heat. S tir in I teaspoon sugar; cool. C oconut Filling: Beat together 2 packages (3 ounces each) softened cream cheese, 14 cup sugar and 'A teaspoon alm ond extract u n til sm ooth. Beat in I egg u n til well blended. Stir in 2 cans (3'/z ounces each) flaked coconut. Concordia College Intercultural Center w ill sponsor a food gathering day along with community churches on Nov. 17th between the hours o f 9:am and 3:00 pm. The C oncordia students along with the youth from Lutheran, Bap tist, M ethodist, Pentecostal, and other churches w ill circulate through the co m m un ity co lle cting non- perishable food from homes and stores. Names o f needy families will be obtained from churches and organizations so that the gathered food can be distributed to those in need before Thanksgiving Day. The Intercultural Center at Con cordia is sponsoring this food collec- tio n to encourage c u ltu ra l in tegration while serving and respon ding to a communtiy need. The plans for this food drive w ill bring together the young people fro m d iffe re n t community churches and the Con cordia students. The food collection e ffo rt w ill promote fellowship between church groups and C oncordia students. They w ill acquaint themselves with different churches, different cultural backgrounds, and d iffe re n t en vironments while meeting the needs o f less fortunate people. Most common foliage-type houseplants can be reproduced from cuttings. These inlcude begonias, coleus, fuchsia, geranium , im patiens, ivy, jade, peperomia, philodendron, piggyback plant, and Wandering Jew, among others. Stems, leaves and roots can be cut from these plants and rooted in water, moist sand, or a rooting mix ture. The best rooting m ixture is one that retains water and provides large pore spaces fo r aeration and 3316 N Lombard 239-5150 drainige. Sand combined w ith an equal amount o f peat moss or sphagnum moss is a favorite o f many indoor plant enthusiasts. Others sub stitute perlite and verm iculite fo r sand because these m aterials are looser than sand and provide better aeration. Plants vary in the amount o f time they require fo r roots to fo rm . Chrysanthemums, coleus, fuchsias and velvet plants take one to two weeks. Jade, sanseveria and dieffen- bachia take four to six weeks.
