S hange does n o t a n s w e r th is question in to to , but we do get a v ie w o f t h e ir a s p ir a tio n s , th e ir fru s tr a tio n s , and th e ir lo ves, and th e ir re la tio n s h ip w ith o th e r Black wom en T h e ir men are not on the stage, b u t one c a n n o t de ny th e ir presence, it perm eates the the atre and o u r m inds, it is a sexual pre sence. The seven wom en o f the P o rtla n d Black Repertory T heatre, under the d ire ctio n o f Rosem ary A lle n , dance, sing, and act, w ith s k ill and some tim es excellence. They seetn to have a com m on bond that transcends their fe m in in ity ; perhaps it is the beauty o f th e ir Blackness that is in contrast to th e b la n d w h ite n e s s o f th is reviewer. W e see these w om en a ctin g out th e ir ch ild h o o d games in the streets o f New Y o r k , D e tro it, and o th e r cities, m a tu rin g fro m the back seats o f Black B uicks to reach and acquire love fro m th e ir men, never fo rg e ttin g tha t the w o rld in w hich they live in is lily w hite. M usic is in the ir soul. As in a line fro m Shakespeare’ s T w e lfth N ig h t, ‘ ‘ I f m usic be the fo o d o f love, play o n ” ; and they p la y on. They endure the torm en t o f rape a n d because it is th e ir s o -c a lle d friends w h o co m m it this barbarism , they blam e themselves. A t one po in t we hear ‘ ‘ I c o u ld n 't sta n d being sorry and colored at the same tim e ” ; so the w o m en m a tu re , th e y sto p b e in g s o rry and begin to becom e wom en; Black wom en. " W h a t is love?” They ask, “ Is it magic? Is it sensual? Is it d iff ic u lt ? " But th e ir love is always th ro w n back, it is n 't th e ir love that th e ir men seek i t ’ s the ir loins. “ I th o u g h t y o u c o u ld ta k e it b a b y.” said one lover, “ 1 thought you cou ld take i t ” ; as i f she had no choice but to accept her lo ve r's in d is c re tio n s . O ne w om en loses her childre n to a frenzied lover and to keep her sanity, she must dance, and dance. S h a n g e 's m u s ic a l p o e tr y is no m atch fo r the flo w in g verses o f M aya A n g e lo u , b u t it is a v o ic e th a t causes us to listen. The ending o f this e m o tio n a l p la y is e le c tr ify in g , “ I fo u n d G od in m yself, and 1 loved her fie rc e ly ," they sing. It was a standing o va tio n , w ith the Black men leading the audience to a long applause. A high school graduate and a f o r m er s tu d e n t o f th e U n iv e r s ity o f M a ry la n d , Jackson decided to make P o rtla n d his hom e a fter his discharge fro m the U .S . A ir Force in 1964. A fo rm e r S ta ff Sgt. (E-5) and a V ie t nam vet, he continues to p o rtra y the d isciplin e th a t one acquires fro m any area o f the arm ed forces and carries this self d iscip lin e in to his profession that has co n trib u te d to his success. As m a n y o f o u r p re v io u s ro le m odels, Jackson searched and fo u n d a career that he enjoyed and felt he c o u ld p e rfo rm best in . In 1969 he becam e an e m p lo ye e o f the A m e rica n N a tio n a l Insurance C o m p a n y as an in s u ra n c e agent and rem ained in th a t cap acity fo r fo u r years. Some o f Jackson’ s success can be a ttr ib u te d to his very w a rm sm ile, basic p e rso n a lity and genuine c o n cern fo r m a n k in d in g e n e ra l. H e, h o w e v e r, d id n o t de pe nd on the above qu a litie s to pave the way fo r a successful career. R e a lity to ld h im th a t y o u m u st be e d u c a tio n a lly pre pa red also. W ith th is in m in d , Jackson started ta kin g beginning and advanced classes fo r h im se lf and the com pany, and s till continues when the o p p o rtu n ity presents itself. As part o f the incentive program , Jackson has shown us by his suc cess that you can start at the b o tto m and w ith s e lf d is c ip lin e a n d h a rd w o rk w o rk y o u r w a y in to a to p p o sitio n. He enjoys Ashing, carpen try , tin k e rin g w ith cars, g o lfin g and most o f a ll he loves to bake pastries and feels he is p re tty good at it. W hen asked fo r his fo rm u la fo r success his reply was: “ There is no fo rm u la fo r success. The m ain ingredient fo r a successful career, especially in an o ccu p a tio n where you do not have to punch a clo ck, is self disciplin e.
