May 17. 1979 'The Innocents' (Editor's Nota: This is a review of the first edition of a new prl- eon-orianted newspaper by an O.S.P. inmate who choses to remain anonymous.) As some readers may be aware from reading this newspaper or a few other Northwest newspapers, there is a man serving life at Oregon State Penitentiary who claims he is inno cent. Not only does Rod Addicks claim he is innocent, but he further states that the authorities framed him and in fact know that he is inno cent. In the world o f the imprisoned such lamenting is not uncommon, yet there have been few cases where there is so much factual evidence supporting the convict’s contention. The evidence reported in other news papers: W illam ette Week, Bend Bulletin, The (Longview) Daily News (to name a few o f the many stories) and including an interview with Ad dicks and the real killerfs) in his case left little doubt as to the validity o f Addicks' protestations. And any re maining doubt is removed when one talks to bank robber, escape artist, and professional hit-m an, Floyd "F rosty” Forsberg. Review But this is not to be a story singularly focused on the innocence o f Rod Addicks. We believe that the Marion County Circuit Court is bet ter able than us to weigh the mass o f evidence which supports Addicks’ innocence. This story is about The Innocents, a small but pow erful newspaper that has been created within the walls o f O.S.P. Due to in s titu tio n policy regarding prison oriented publications. The Innocents makes no statements for or against the in s titu tio n . E d ito r N orm an Crowhurst (who is also publisher o f The Samaritan, an anti-IRS news letter and chief correspondent for The National Educator) says that he started to put a note o f thanks in issue one o f The Innocents regarding W arden C upp’ s cooperation in allowing the media access to the prin cipals involved, but he decided that the very existence o f the paper was in its e lf a tribute to the progressive management o f the prison. Although the paper is printed by a local prim ing company, the editing and layout is done within the walls o f the prison. The first printing o f The Innocents was but a few thousand papers. However, the m ailing list o f this edition’ s complimentary copies (sub scription price is 50c per issue — present plans call for publication on a quarterly basis) reads like a who’ s who list o f the American judicial de partment. For example: every United States Senator, every Oregon State Senator and Representative, every large Oregon and Washington news paper, H a rl Haas and his entire staff, and the top 100 or so FBI agents in America. This is but a partial list o f the initial mailing. The style is equal to the best o f the leading crime magazines, and its concern with the plight o f innocent Black people as well as white should find broad acceptance among per sons concerned with the dual stan dard of justice that still hangs like an albatross around the scales held by that blindfolded white lady who sup posedly can’t see color and social status.
