Sears suit (Continued from page 2 col. 3) grievances of discrimination. “ Many o f the rules and regulation about which Sears complains were created after the enactment o f the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Prior to that, there is no question that Sears, like many other private and government employers, were discrim inating against Blacks. But largely through the e ffo rts o f its late C hairm an Julius Rosenwald, Sears in recent years has been regarded as a friend o f minorities. “ The fact, therefore, that progress was made in opening up oppor tunities to minorities in the last 12 years sould only be regarded as evidence that, where there are laws, rules, regulations and correct government policy, employers w ill take steps to end discrimination. “ For these reasons, the NAACP has called upon Sears to withdraw its suit. I f this is not done, the Association is prepared to challenge the suit either through a direct coun ter-challenge or as a friend o f the court.” Junius Williams, president o f the National Bar Association, said the Sears suit challenges the federal governm ent’ s a ffirm a tiv e action policies. “ There is no lack o f clarity with respect to the legal and moral obligations for an integrated work force. The Civil Rights Act o f 1964 clearly outlines the obligations o f employers. Any actions designed to side step these regulations are an at tempt to dodge responsibility and create an aura o f confusion. “ Large corporations like Sears are uniquely positioned to initiate and maintain this kind o f litigation. I f corporations are allowed to pursue these tactics they w ill tie up and drain the limited resources o f civil rights organizations and their attorneys in waging meaningless and pointless litigation.” Jesse Jackson, executive director o f PUSH, and the National News paper Publishers Association have called for a four month boycott o f Sears to demonstrate opposition to the suit in a manner that will bring economic pressure to bear. I he announced 5 per cent discount on catalogue items is not a response to this boycott, but a response to the finding by the Carter Administration that Sears prices exceded the volun tary wage-price guidelines and a per sonal request by President Carter for a cutback on prices. Senior Citizen Alert In the past two weeks, three elderly women have been attacked and sexually assaulted in their homes in this area. A ll o f the victims volun tarily admitted their attackers into the home. F o r fu rth e r in form a tion call Neighborhhods Against Crime, 287- 3692.
