(Photo: Ron Blanchette) by Allen Jones SAN FRANCISCO MIME TROUPE TO PERFORM "ELECTROBUCKS" The San Francisco Mime Troupe returns to Portland A p ril 21st and 22nd with its latest original musical comedy, “ Electrobucks.” I he multi-racial troupe, which has earned a national and international re putation with its special blend o f zany comedy and penetrating satire, packed houses here last year with a comic dramatization o f urban renewal, “ The Hotel Universe.” “ Electrobucks” anatomizes, in one action-packed hour, the “ Me” movement, the emerging Chicano middle class, and the glittering new elec tronics industry. The scene is the windowless assembly line o f a microprocessor plant in the Santa I lara Valley — or the Willamette Valley. Wisps o f harmful solvents and acids hang in the letid air as Edith, an Oakie Dust Bowl survivor turned com pany loyalist; Delores, a Black labor rebel turned cynic; and Dela, a Chicano street siren, strain their eyes to inscribe programs on tiny components that might be destined for Pong games or for guided missiles. Haunting the women’s every move is Juan Hernandez, alias John Hender son, an upwardly mobile production manager who has dropped the Mexican in him to become 99% American. Henderson wants a penthouse at the top, and to get it he has to squeeze more and more work out o f the overworked, underpaid women. Haunting Henderson is the ghost o f his grandfather, who rode with Zapata during the Mexican revolution. This comic spectre o f working-class solidarity is losing the struggle for Henderson’s soul to Mike Roebucks, Perrier-drinking, awureness-trained owner o f the plant, until Dela enters the picture. She soon has Henderson singing Spanish and dropping in at local disco, but their romance — and the plot — must take several increasingly farcical turns before a surprise ending deals out justice and sets our hero straight. “ Electrobucks” features original songs in English and Spanish as well as a medley o f country-western, soul and salsa tunes. This event sponsored by Albina Women’s League and Family Circus Theater, w ill be presented at Beaumont School Auditorium, N.E. 42nd and Fremont. Tickets are $3.50 and arc on sale at United Front Bookstore, Albina Women’ s League and Women’s Place Bookstore. Wc sometimes underestimate the abilities o f a person, especially when the person happens to be very basic and humanistic in character. We fail to sec the intellect, the capabilities, the ability to excel, etc. i f they do not act in a manner that we are accus tomed to seeing persons o f position act. The Black role model for this week is a very brilliant, proud man with loads o f self-esteem. As the role model walks with his head higher and shoulders erect, a trail o f dignity fo llo w s him ; a sense o f security seems to engulf him. This man is Paul Dixoh, Director o f the County Mental Health Department (AHRC). Dixon is a very versatile person, in both his professional and personal endeavors. Married with two children, Dixon came to Portland from Coffeyville, Kansas. He received his A A from C o ffe yville Junior College; a BA from Wichita State University; and a Master o f Education from Oregon State University. His work experience includes that o f teacher at Timber Lake Job Corps at Estacada; teacher at M a rtin Luther King and Vernon Elementary Schools in Portland. Presently he directs the Mental Health Depart ment, where he supervised a staff o f twelve. Land and property investments, working with young people, watch ing TV (especially sports), playing cards, dancing, reading non-fiction, listening to jazz and traveling are only a few o f Dixon’ s many hobbies. There is not enough space to in clude the many volunteer and com munity activities tljat “ Paul” is in volved in. He is constantly searching for ways to improve himself and the conditions o f people in need — both physically and mentally. His formula for success is a reflec tion o f his way o f life, his belief and by Ruth Spencer Pretty Ms. Anise H a ll keeps a busy schedule. She is a fashion model for Portland stores, coordinates fashion shows fo r Churches and clubs, and sings w ith Ken B e rry ’ s musical group. Ms. Hall recently participated in Jhe dramatization o f “ DuBois.” The women o f St. Philip Episcopal Church w ill hold their annual Lenten Green Tea, Psalm Sunday, April 8th from 1.00-5:00 p.m . at 120 N .E. Knott. A program will be presented under the direction o f Mrs. Angeline B rit ton, Miss Margaret Heil is chairman. Herb Cawthorne recently enjoyed The Reverend Jessie Jackson, Director o f PUSH said that institu tion o f government would change overnight if every Black 18-year-old graduated from high school with a diplom a and a voter registration card. Benjamin Hooks, Executive Direc tor o f the NAACP. said: “ We have abolished slavery; it remains for us to combat and to abolish inequality; to tear down the structures that keep us divided and keep our people suf fering.” Link Carmen Walker and Link Jacquelyn Brown o f the Portland Chapter o f Links, Inc. are chair persons o f the glamorous “ Ebony Fashion Fair” to be staged at Civic A u d ito riu m , on Easter Sunday, A pril 15, 1979 at 7:00 p.m. Ticket chairperson. It comes from loving and being loved. It comes from respect. Respecting yourself and demanding it from others. It comes from sharing. I feel that there are three things one must have. I f you have these three things, there is not very much in life (both professionally and personally) that you can not accomplish. These three things are Faith, Trust and Hope. “ In addition to the above, one must have a dream, envision the out come and do what is legally and hu manly possible in achieving that goal.” Surveying the success o f Dixon’s personal and professional life I would say that his formula for suc cess is truly workable. It has been an enlightening plea sure and experience w riting about Dixon, as well as other models in the past weeks. I am not only getting my o rig in a l opinions o f Black role models in Portland changed, 1 am having a ball doing so.
