Sports Talk by Ron Sykes Sports Editor r e Curtis Ramsey survived this left to the noee to w in a 10th round TKO over previously unbeaten Alan W eb b fo r the P a c ific N o rth w e s t W e lte r w e ig h t Championship. A t present the Pac-10 is the strong est basketball conference on the West Coast, but closing fast is the West Coast Athlete Conference. The W C A C was formed in 1953. C om prised o f fiv e team s, Santa C la ra , San Francisco, San Jose State, St. M a ry ’s and Pacific. Santa Clara was the league's first cham pion beating San Francisco in a playoff. Advancing to the N C A A tourna ment they beat Hardin Simmons, 81- 56, beat W yoming, 67-52 and lost to Washington, 74-62. Everyone remembers the great San Francisco team o f 1955, which won two straight N C A A ’s and was led by the 6 ’ U ’ ’ All-Am erican center. Bill Russell a n d 6 ’ l ” All-Am erican, K .C . Jones. D urin g the past fiv e years the W C A C has made significant gains against the Pac-10 by plucking o ff a few plums o f their own. San Francisco pulled o ff a major coup by attracting to their school three o f the most sought after high school players in the nation when they hauled in Bill C artw right 7 ’ ; W inford Boynes. 6*6” ; and James Hardy. 6 ’7” . Heavyw eight W illie "The Cannon" Shannon, in his first Portland appearance, extended his string of wins to 14 w ith a TKO over Tony Stone. Alao vic torious was Jim m y Williams w ho decisioned Steve M oyer. Jeff wins The Jefferson Democrats won a berth in the Triple A State T o u r nament with a double overtime win over Madison. W ith 6:31 to go in the fourth quar ter, two free throws by Jon Newell cut J e ffs lead to 4. The quarter en ded in a tie. In overtime, Madison drew ahead by 2. Dwayne Lincoln missed his chance to win the game with a free throw but was robbed o f the oppor tu n ity when N ew ell backed away fro m his spot on the lin e - - a violation. Reggie Lewis took a perfect pass from Howard Jenkins to tie the game at 58 with two seconds left. Second o vertim e. P h il H opson scored four, giving J e ff the victory. Portland’s Stu Inman coached in the W C A C taking over the San Jose job from Walt McPherson in 1961 after McPherson had finished dead last for two consecutive years. M c Pherson's highest finish was second in 1955 when he was runner-up to eventual N C A A ch am p io n San Francisco. In Inman's five years, from 1961- 1966, he could do no better than a second place finish in 1965 with San Francisco again the conference champions. I f you wonder how Rick Adelman became a Trailblazer . . . SAFEWAY Darryl Dawkins displaying hia "H ay, w h a t you doing? you bettor get m oving,' slam dunk last season against Buffalo. Dawkins considers boxing by Ullysses Tucker, Jr. In this comer standing 6 '1 1” and weighing 258 pounds, and the chal lenger for the heavyweight title o f the world. Dancing Darryl Dawkins. “ Yes, I ’ ve been considering giving up basketball for boxing,” said the massive youth from Evans High in Orlando, Florida. “ I figured out the other day that 1 could cam four m il lion in a couple o f fights. The most I could profit from basketball is two million, now take a look at how long I have to play to earn that amount. Boxing would be much easier.” Aside from the ring for a moment, the 76ers 118-115 loss to the Blazers Tuesday night, Dawkins tallied 24 points, and gangstered ten rebounds in 42 minutes o f play. Eleven games ago he broke his career scoring mark o f 23 by busting loose for 25 points. Since then he has scored 27, 27 and 30 last Friday. Dawkins has ten straight games in which he has scored in double figures in both scoring and rebounding. During the eleven game stretch he has scored 225 points, muscled 136 boards, and backhanded 28 shots to average 20.4, 12.3 and 2.5. Dawkins has also fired at a 48 percent d ip from the floor. “ He has been playing some excel lent basketball,” said Coach Billy Cunningham. “ But there are several areas o f the game that Darryl must work on. For example, he must learn self-control, and more concentra tio n . I t ’ s am azing how one in dividual can have so much potential, and with maturity he’ll develop into a great one,” said the coach. In reference to the three “ crowd silencing slam d u n k s ,” D aw kins named them in order: the “ over the land and through the skys, don’t watch me dunk it’ll burn your eyes.” Then there was the “ In your face dis grace” over three Blazers standing in the lanes. And the last one was en titled simply the “ heart stopper.” Dawkins, a D .J. in Philadelphia during the off-season justified his m otivation for boxing by saying, I d lik e to earn some quick money,” he said. “ I cannot see my self as the type o f individual that has to work hard all his life, I want to kick o ff my shoes and retire as soon as possible.” “ Double D ,” as he is called by teammates as well as a host of other name titles (ranging from the “ Prince o f D unk” to “ D r Dunk-n-stuff” ) w has been c ritic iz e d by fans and writers for his childish behavior on the court. Against the Blazers he grabbed a rebound with one hand extended above his head, and flicked a bullet court length pass without bending his elbow to a zipping Eric Money who banked a lay-up o ff the glass without a dribble. Dawkins turned around towards the crowd, put one hand on his hip and made an “ ugly” face to part o f the sellout audience in atten dance. Last week the Oregonian printed a story a ttrib u tin g Dawkins as still holding a “ beer'against the Blazers’ Maurice Lucas for the incident in the 1976 p la y -o ff when he was blind sided by a punch. “ People consider me as some type o f psycho,” he said seriously, “ but that’s not the case at hand. I ’m not as bad as all the bum press that I receive. W hy should I be mad at Luke when we are both trying to earn a living in the same trade? People do not realize the N B A is a power trip, either you are a mover or you get moved!” The deal with Luke and I is only psychological warfare, it puts inten sity into the game. But people never notice that at the end o f the game we all shake hands, and maybe speak of a good play or something,” he said. By this time the 21-year-old Daw kins mind and thoughts had drifted back into the ring, the lack o f con centration his coach talked about. He stood up and began pacing back and forth. “ M y style would be to punch, and dance, punch, and dance,” he de monstrated. “ I ’d be moving, and grooving,” he said positively. Dawkins then asked, “ How many times do you think that I ’d get punch ed in the face?” Not many because I ’m swift. A ll I have to do is bang them on the top o f their heads. I t ’ll be a breeze,” he said. When are you gonna fight Ali? When are you gonna fight Ali? Excuse me Darryl, when are you going to fight Ali? “ 1 heard you the first two times, so you don’t have to repeat your self,” he answered. “ Evidently, I must not be ready because I ’m still playing basketball. But believe me, when I get tired o f the game you’ll surely know. I ’ ll call a press con ference. Excuse me, we’re on our way to Seattle so take it easy and I ’ll see you next tim e,” Dawkins said. Well Inman was coaching in the lea gue when Rick, playing for Loyola, was named M V P i t 196«. In 1968 the W C A C all star team was made up of: Bud Ogden.
