Woman welder builds cars Mai Washington is one o f the best welders at Chrysler C orporation's Lynch Road Assembly Plant in Detroit. When she was growing up in Ripley, Tennessee, she was deter mined to be a success. Today, she is helping b u ild the all-new 1979 Chrysler New Yorker and Newport, and Dodge St. Regis cars. To become one of the best welders at the Lynch Road Plant Mai volun teered for special training to upgrade welding skills, and she is now qualified fo r advancement in her department. The training was o f fered by Chrysler during the plant's renovation last summer. Mai received an award at the end o f the training fo r being the best welder in her class o f ten people. Her classmates (all male) voted her the best welder in their group. Mai worked extra duty to become the best in her class. She cut short her lunch hours to study welding. She also skipped her breaks to practice the new skills she was learning. A t the end o f the training Mai qualified in brazing, and CO2 and arc-gas welding. When asked why she volun teered for the training, she said, “ I went into it with the ambition o f doing something for myself, and I • • • • • • • • did. The training was one o f the greatest things Chrysler could ever do.” Mai worked as a meat-handler in a D etroit supermarket while waiting fo r an opening at C hrysler. Her chance came through a program funded by the Comprehensive Em ployee Training Act (C ETA). She spent six months learning the basics o f spot w elding at C h rysle r’ s Technical Center in Highland Park. A fte r her C E T A tra in in g , M ai worked a year as a spot welder at Lynch Road Assembly before taking the advanced training last summer. Why would a young woman want to be a welder? Mai says one reason is the money she makes. There is also the feeling o f accomplishment, and, as she says, “ I t ’ s a good trade. Nobody can take it away from you.” The Lynch Road Plant is now open and producing quality cars. M ai W ashington is helping build those cars using the skills she learned during her special training last sum mer. When asked how it feels to be in a job that doesn’t have many women applicants, she says, “ A couple o f the men tried to ju td o me in the training, but that just made me work harder.” "The PRODUCE CfNTIR of PORTLAND” S GRAPEFRUIT COACHELLA VALLEY RUBY RED K U D T KCLr I • ______________ ¡uscer, • KAUR H • M Z M U.S. Nfl 1 NEW FLORIDA : red potatoes . 5 ibs.
