Bogle The Retired Railroad Senior Citizens Association held its annual banquet recently at the Royal Esquire Club on N.E. Alberta Street. A bout 190 members, w ith their families and friends turned out to dine, to socialize and to hear State Senator W illiam McCoy, Jr. who gave the principle address o f the evening. William Gordon, currently presi dent o f the organization, sketch ed in the background o f the organization, saying that the mem bership totals up to 208 persons, nearly all retired with only a few still employed. They gather monthly in general meetings usually at the Senior Service Center to visit and just to "keep in touch,” he said. During the month a "Benevolent” community o f members visits the shut-ins at home, those in the hospital and the bereaved families o f former members. They worked with high regard fo r each other to fo rm RRSCA during the latter part o f the fifties. Born in Kansas, John had lived in Oklahoma and had moved on to Omaha, Nebraska in 1905. There he won a place for himself as a member o f the smooth working crew o f waiters at the prestigious Henshaw Hotel. (See accompanying photograph.) When, many years later, he retired from railroading, he retired as an instructor o f waiters. John was called out o f retirement to work at the Waverly Country Club to staff and train waiters at the club, which he enjoyed doing for a few years. Stanton Duke, born in Galesburg, Illinois and reared in Portland, also became a waiter and club-car man for the Union Pacific. He worked for 46 years in that capacity but found time for a very pleasant avocation fo r which, too he w ill be long remembered. Stanton Duke, almost single hand- edly, was responsible for bringing to Portland many o f the famous big dance bands, Black stars o f the nation's music roster.
