SERVICE & Q U A LITY MAKE OUR REPUTATION
by Kathryn H . Bogle
The Retired Railroad Senior
Citizens Association held its annual
banquet recently at the Royal
Esquire Club on N.E. Alberta Street.
A bout 190 members, w ith their
families and friends turned out to
dine, to socialize and to hear State
Senator W illiam McCoy, Jr. who
gave the principle address o f the
evening.
William Gordon, currently presi
dent o f the organization, sketch
ed in the background o f the
organization, saying that the mem
bership totals up to 208 persons,
nearly all retired with only a few still
employed. They gather monthly in
general meetings usually at the
Senior Service Center to visit and
just to "keep in touch,” he said.
During the month a "Benevolent”
community o f members visits the
shut-ins at home, those in the
hospital and the bereaved families o f
former members.

John came west to Seattle in 1919
but decided to live in Portland after
visiting here. When, many years
later, he retired from railroading, he
retired as an instructor o f waiters.
John was called out o f retirement to
work at the Waverly Country Club
to staff and train waiters at the club,
which he enjoyed doing for a few
years.
Stanton Duke, born in Galesburg,
Illinois and reared in Portland, also
became a waiter and club-car man
for the Union Pacific. He worked for
46 years in that capacity but found
time for a very pleasant avocation
fo r which, too he w ill be long
remembered. With his flair for the
dramatic arts, Stanton had an added
successful run as an entrepreneur.
Stanton Duke, almost single hand-
edly, was responsible for bringing to
Portland many o f the famous big
dance bands, Black stars o f the
nation's music roster. Stars such as
Jimmy Luceford, Cab Calloway,
Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton
and others lighted up Portland life.
Because o f Stanton Duke those
happy big-band sounds reverberated
through some o f the finest dance
