This course begins with the very first elements and principles of the o p e ra tio n o f “ F o r-P ro fit” e n te r prise. The basic divisions o f small b u sin ess a rc co v ered : R etail, W h o lesale, Sales A gent, Service, M a n u fa c tu rin g . C o n tra c tin g , Recreation, etc. There is a gradual progression through three semesters, fro m b asic o rg a n iz a tio n an d operation procedures through ad vertising and marketing, financing, contracts, governm ent contracting, p erso n n el, finan cial m anagem ent, etc. This sequential arrangement will make the course equally useful for th o se w ho m ay a lre a d y be in business. There will be an exam ination of the initial documents relevant to the form ation o f a business enterprise an d o f th e filin g a n d re c o rd in g p ro ced u res o f the relevant public agencies. In this connection there will be discussion o f the various types o f p ro p rie to rsh ip s and the criteria for choice: Individual, P art nership, Joint Venture, Corporation, other. There will be an inquiry into the licensing and permit and zoning requirements o f the city, county and other political subdivisions and a d e m o n stratio n th a t th eir require ments are directly related to site selec tion, building choice, capital, and other financial considerations. R év élan t le g isla tio n w ill be discussed as it applies to Financing. M arketing, Occupational H ealth and Safety, etc. The area o f m inority business and related governmental inputs will be discussed, including special financial aids and contract preference. The student will be aided in d ev elo p in g his b asic skills in retrieving inform ation relating to all aspects o f business and finance and tra in in g . T he ro le o f the T ra d e Association will be explained with itc advantages in the area of marketing, exch an g e o f in fo rm a tio n on technology and finance. The common assumption among many whites and some “ successful” Blacks that m inority progress in the United States is continuing unabated into the late 1970*s has been disputed by the U .S . C ivil R ights C o m mission. The research showed Blacks lagging far behind whites in educa tio n , incom e, e m p lo y m e n t, and housing. The Reverend Jesse Jackson and P U SH have been contacting radio stations and record shops across the country in order to get them to stop playing and selling th e record “ Some G irls,” because of the four le tte r w orded reference to Black women’s alleged sexual appetites. “ How the School M anufactures M isfits,” by Delos H. Kelly intends to sen sitize te a c h e rs, e d u c a to rs, parents, adm inistrators, peers, and others to the way in which the school a c tu a lly m a n u fa c tu re s a c e rta in number o f “ misfits” in society. The book suggests that the process begins with labeling, sorting, segregating, and stratefying pupils by counselors, a d m in is tra to rs , and te a c h e rs. Therefore, the source of the childs deviant behavior can be traced to those who apply the labels. The suicide rate for young Black men is increasing rapidly according to R obert Davis, researcher. Two- thirds of all suicides in any given year are committed by white males.
