"Free" has scored 29, 26 and 11, not bad for most, but terrible for the nation's leading major college scorer During the summer Williams proved his basketball ability, some doubted his overall game, by playing point guard for Coach Denny Crum, of Louisville in the world university games, a tourney won handily by the U.S. After scoring 41 in his debut against Colorado State, the 6'4" senior hit rocky road and now draws double coverage wherever he goes. So, now, if the PSI I team is to be successful...it's simple... others must score. The Vikings return four starters from last year's tern and were expected to do well. After three games the "Free" was averaging 32 points, a far cry from his NCAA mark last year of 38.8. S.rarts Illustrated honored Freeman with a feature story and the added publicity seems to have put the jinx on the pride of PSU. PSU is now on the road for six straight games. The road has never bothered “Free" in the past, however, and he could easily get his stuff together at any stop... Spokane, Missoula, Moscow. Lexington or Milwaukee. PSU will showcase it's team and Freeman in the Kentucky classic. An invitation was extended last year by Kentucky Athletic Director Cliff Hagen. Hagen apparently thought Williams would add a little something to the tourney. And when Freeman finally gets on track, and there's little doubt that he will, then the Kentucky fans will be in for a real treat. P.I.L. basketball got underway and things look a little shaky for the big three "Inner City" teams, Jefferson, Grant, and Benson. Grant now stands 2-0 but still not impressive. The Generals lack the scoring power and will certainly miss the scoring power of Mark Radford, Welton Jordan and Pickle Lewis and also the steady defense and floor play of Jerry Stilwell. The true test for Grant will be this week-end when they take on highly rated Parkrose at the General gym. three points. In the first meeting this season the Rlazers came from behind with a 30-21 fourth quarter to pull out a tough 98 94 victory. Both teams played exceptionally well and some will say, Lou Harris and "Barbershop Willie," that Portland won because Dr. J. was injured at the lime and didn't play much. But examining the stats I find that Julius Erving played 25 minutes and Portland's Maurice Lucas played 23 minutes thus neutralizing each other. Tickets for Blazer games are becoming almost impossible to obtain...and things will only get worse. Now that local football is complete fans will compete for, yes, the few remaining Paramount du cats. At the Paramount three of the last five telecasts have been sold out with an official capacity of 2,965. The Blazers have set one record that, at present, cannot be broken...they've had a combined Coliseum and Paramount attendance of 15,631. Kareem is back...watch out for LA... the king will get LA back in the race. After breaking his shooting hand on Kent Benson's head in the league opener. Jabbar returned to play against Mil waukee scoring 26 points, and 14 rebounds in an LA come from behind win over the Burks. INNER-CITY P.I.L. They soar like Dr, J„ they glide like Clyde, and handle the ball like Calvin Murphy,..well almost. What are they?... they're the ASP Pacers, coached by Mr. Greg Williams and feared by all they survey and play. In a game played against Beach School Monday night at Eliot grade school, ASP dominated from start to finish. Rich Norton, ASP guard, led all scorers with 18. Norton hit consistently from the outside and whenever he decided to go inside he scored there, too. ASP opened with a full court press which produced numerous turnovers by Beach. Gordy Loving, ASP center, was a demon on both the offense and defensive boards pulling down 12 for the evening. Beach was able to remain close during the first quarter by hitting from the outside. ASP is to 8th grade Goldenball as UCLA is to Pac-8 basketball. Last year Coach Greg William’s ASP Pacers carved out a brilliant 42-1 record, losing only to All Saints by one point - a loss they eventually avenged. STRONG INSIDE - Oregon’s highly talented freshman, Felton Sealey, demon strated remarkable moves in Duck's 78-51 win over hapless OSU Beavers. Free inside. 12 original recipes. Wednesday night's Blazer encounter should be a dandy, and for sure it will probably be decided by no more than Jeff" Hermiston After a cold, frigid beginning, in which the usually hot shooting Demos failed to score for the first five minutes, Jefferson ran off 24 unanswered points to lead an out-classed, and out-quirked Hermiston team 24 4, thus serving notice on the P.I.L. and the State that the Demo's are ready. With Senior guard Brian Hughes hitting from the outside and Ron Ransom. 6'1" forward, and Virgil Allen, 67" center, dominating inside, the Demos simply destroyed the visitors from the watermelon capital of Oregon. Allen finished with 20 points and Ron Ransom had 16 to lead all scorers. The Jefferson speed was as confusing to Hermiston as Einstein's theory on relativity was to the World. Next came the Goldenball tourney in San Francisco, which ASP won by beat ing Stockton 114-65, San Francisco, 58 52, and Modesto 64-47.
