Under the contract compliance consoli dation pi-ogram announced last year by the Departm ent of Labor, positions farm erly allotted to the Departments of Commerce and Health. Education and W elfare, and the Veterans Admimstra lion, have been transferred to H U D . The transfers involve six positions and $144.000 from Commerce. 52 jobs and 1.534 jobs from Health. SAFEWAY OIL FILTERS $ Jostice eaters Bakke case The C a rter Administration stated its view last week that it is constitutional to use race as one factor in affirm ative action programs. The anti-discrimination stand came in a 74-page brief filed with the U-S. Supreme Court by the Justice Departm ent. Consideration of race is important to help adjust for differences caused by discrimination, it said. The legal language says: “ft is appropriate to take race into account to adjust far differences in credentials that may have been caused by diacnmiaatioa but do not reflect differences in ability to succeed or in ability to contribute to the medical profession and the health of the general population." The brief was field in the Bakke case now before the Supreme C oon, oa a w rit of certiorari from teh California Supreme Court. Bakke, who is w hite, filed suit in 1974 charging the U niversity of California Medical School at D u n s twice denied him admission solely because of his race.
