CONCERT Before I got into the review ing of the individual acts who appeared along with M arvin Gaye, I would like to comment on the promotional aspects of the show. I really don’t know whether or not this was their first promotional effort, however, if th e y ’re planning a future in the business they had certainly b etter got th eir act together. Soon!! Basically, what a promoter is supposed to do is; take care of all the promoting of the show afte r all the contracts have been signed by the major parties involved w ith a show. The physical promotion of the show should begin at least tw o months prior to the show, with gradual increases in advertising, radio. T V . newspapers and etc. Unfortunately, the promotion of the concert was too late (three weeks). There wasn't a city wide effort made which hurt the overall attendance. I f the promoters made any money on the show, they probably could have spent it at Geneva's on any given Saturday night. I f you're thinking I have a pesonal vendetta against the promoters of the concert - you're wrong. I know and respect them very highly. But w hat I am saying is that unsuccessful promotional efforts can and do make it difficult for other Black promoters to procure bookings by your favorite major talents - as anyone in the business will quickly tell you. There are quite a few top Black promoters that are very successful. likeiDick G rifly and Don Cornelius, out of Los Angeles; Teddy Powell, Carl H u n ter and Queens International all out of New York; and M r. Quentin P e rry , whom 1 am most impressed w ith, out of A tlan ta, who's projected a 4.5 million dollar year. Don't worry about it fellas, the next show w ill do much better - I am sure! F A Y E C A R R O L - S H E ’S F A N T A S T IC !! * * • Faye Carrol, a singer who has been around for a number of years, opened the concert last Friday night at the Coliseum She offered her audience a very soulful performance. H er musical background is strictly Gospel. Which was obvious to everyone as her performance progressed. You’ll often hear a singer that's really good, but for some reason the musical m aterial doesn't quite fit the singer. Everything that Faye sang, fit her to a tee. Tunes like;“How Insensitive.” “W hat A Difference A Day M akes," “The Good Life." and “Y o ur Red Wagon," they all complimented the singer. Keep her name in mind, that's Faye Carrol, you’ll hear it again. I thought she was el! L .T .D . - S T IL L D O IN ’ IT • • • L .T D . has come into th eir own in the last three years. This was the second tim e I've seen them perform , and they continue to grow, rig ht along w ith th eir popularity. The nearly all Black audience was very receptive to the ten piece group known as L .T .D . Most of the selections they sang were taken from th eir latest album entitled. “Something To Love." along w ith th eir latest single "Back In Love.” A very nice show. ; A rte th eater w ill prem iere an Thursday, anthology of Black Broadway musicals, past and Co-produced by Star Productions "Stardust" provides family entertainm ent aa it tik e s you back to relive the evolution of Black productions on Broadway and the songs th at made them famous. The Portland baaed cast of ' "Stardust" is directed by Rosemary Allen, who conceived the production. Musical D irector. Thara Mem ory conducts the ton pi »ce accompanying ensemble, choreography by Sagirah Banka, and costumes designed by Bobby Foulder. The performance w ill begin at 8:00 p.m and there w ill be no admission lee. H alf the event's proceeds w ill be donated to the metropolitan area nutritional program that serves hot meals to elderly shut-ins. Scheduled for Portland International Raceway, registration of Borsches and Corvettes begins at 7:00 a.m. Saturday. Septem ber 3rd. Tim e trials begin at 8:30 a.m. th at day. Sunday's all-day race begins at 8:00 a.m. Admission is 32 per person, w ith children under tw elve adm itted free of charge. By comparing traditional African religion, society and art forms to those introduced from Europe, the class will seek to understand Africa's present social and political tensions. The show was just en tirely too long. 1 think the people who attended should be commended for th eir patience. F orty-five minutes to an hour between acts is really testing one s patience. M arvin Gaye without a doubt is one of the prem ier perform ers of our tim e. His performance Friday night exemplifies what greatness in the m usk business really is. H e w ent back and brought it all up front. From start to finish, M arvin did his thing. In a recent T V interview . M arvin told the interview er. "Singing is w hat I do best." I don’t imagine he’ll get any critkism about that. Generally the entire concert was one of the best I'v e seen. The Board had paid Gilcrease p art of his accrued leave in 1974 in an effort to avoid paying it all at once when he resigned and also to pay it at his 1974 salary level ra th e r than at the salary level he earned at the date of his resignation. C SA , however, ordered Gilcrease to re tu rn the money, to be paid upon his resignation. The payment was in accordance w ith the corporations by laws and C S A policy, as well as being required by Oregon law. A special meeting of the PM SC Board of Directors w ill be held on September 7th, at 7:30 p.m. to review the agency's financial status.
