Thursday. February JO, 1977 A neighborhood workshop meeting to discuss establishing a community mental health center for North and Northeast Portland will be held at 7:S0 p.m. on Thursday. February 17th. at the Neigh bora North Office. 7508 N. Herford Avenue. The workshop is aimed at residents of Portland's St. Johns, Portsmouth. Uni versity Park. Kenton. Arbor Lodge and Overlook neighborhoods. This is the first of a series of North Area neighborhood workshops. Public planning meetings for North and North east Portland resident» have been held on December 8th and January 20th, at which approximately 100 and 80 persons re spectively attended. The workshop is open to professionals and mental health agencies. It is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oregon Health Science Center School of Medi cine, which received a one year planning grant from the HEW for the poject. Concordia honors Black Awareness Month Concordia Colleges fourth annual Black Awareness celebration is scheduled for the month of February. Various activities are planned throughout the month with an emphasis on Black history and culture. The Black Awareness Committee of Concordia, consisting of faculty, students and college administra tors, have devoted hours in planning the month in order to provide educational and entertaining activities. Emphasis for the month is in raising the awareness of the college community to the Black culture Rozell Gilmore, Director of Minority Affairs at Concordia stated. “This month represents an attempt to bring people closer together in understanding them selves and their different cultures." He further added. “It is an opportunity for all of us to understand the significance of Roots." “Kick-off" day for the month-long cele bration is Thursday. February 10th. A film festival is scheduled beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Concordia's Fine Arts Build ing. The films selected will focus on aspects of the Black experience. On Thursday. February 24. Dr. Jacob Carruthers. Chairman of the Center for Inner-City Studies at Northeastern Illi nois University in Chicago. Illinois, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Carruthers' lecture, beginning at 11:10 a.m.. will address the issue of presentday racism and the diverse ways it is demonstrated. He attended a Black college, lived in the South, and is well versed on the Black experience. The climaxing event for the month is a Church Music Festival on Sunday. Feb ruary 27th. This festival will feature a number of choirs from Black churches throughout Portland, and the Concordia College Choir. St. Michael's Lutheran Church at Northeast 29th and Dekum will be the setting for this 7:00 p.m. service of Black spirituals and Gospel songs. In addition to bringing Black and white people together for a common experi ence. this music festival will raise funds for Concordia’s E. Shelton Hill Scholar ship fund for minority students. Concordias Black Awareness Month represents an attempt to better under stand Black and white relations, and to raise the level of awareness for all people. New Hope bolds Loy Women’s Day The women of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church will sponsor the annual Lay Women s Day on February 13th during the Morning Service and the Afternoon Service. During the Morning Service, which begins at 11:00 a.m., the New Hope Angel Choir and the New Hope Magnificent Maas Choir will sing and the Special Hay* Mental health programs discussed Womens Day Message will be delivered by Sis. Hazel Brown, member of the Community Church of God in Christ. At the Afternoon Serivce, which starts at 3:00 p.m.. selections will be sung by the Magnificent Mass Choir of New Hope, along with the choirs from Maranatha Church, Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church. Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ and solos will be sung by Sis. Nancy Smith of New Hope and Sis. Ads Reed of Maranatha. A skit will also be prsented by the members of the Mettri Missionary Circle of New Hope. Pastor Reverend A. Barnard Devers and Women's Day Committee headed by Sis. Ruth White and Sis. The appointment was made by Robert Ames. Rose Festival president. The long-traditional Junior Parade is ached uled for Wednesday. June 8th. in the Hollywood district. Cook was first elected an associate director of the Rose Festival in 1971 and named a full director last year. He has been one of the active developers of one of the newer events of the Rose Festival, the Festival of Bands. Serving with Cook on the parade committee are John Mason, vice chair man, Gwen Burns. Ray Conkling. George Rouches and Doyle Soudera. Cook has spent almost a decade with First National Bank and has been a vice president since 1974. He is a director of the Urban League and a member of the Portland City Planning Commission, among other activities.
