Along with The Ramsey Lewis Trio, will have to admit, with second billing and all he was the star for the evening. Ihmday avening at the University of Portland his star was shining aa bright as ever. Turrentine's playing is so alive and vibrant, it's practically impossible not to snap your fingers, pat your foot or just say man! That brother sure gets downli! If you reflect bark on Turrentine's popularity for the past ten years, you have to agree with; "Bill Board", "Down Beat" and any other publication you care to mention, Stanley Turrentine has always been one of the top ten saxophone players in the world. That ia a distinction only a very few ran claim. * Jazz artist McCoy Tyner will perform in two concerts Friday, February 20th, in the Reed College community center. Performances, sponsored by the Reed Cultural Affairs Board, will be at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. McCoy Tyner's album Sahara was voted Record of the Year in the 1973 Down Beat Critics' Poll and was nominated for two Grammy Awards tha*. year, one lor best performance by o group. His double album entitled Knlightment was recorded in 1973 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Other Tyner albums include Song for My Lady and Song of the New World. Tyner is accompanied by a conven tional small group format: saxophone, bass, drums and percussion gadgets. The dominant instrumental theme in his music is percussion; all members of the group play percussion at one time or another. Tyner himself favors a low-pitched bell struck with a mallet or stick and a double octave Indian flute. Percussionist Guilherme Franco plays with an assortment of fifty instruments. Nearly every possible instrumental combination is explored in Tyner's music. Frequent unaccompanied piano inter ludes appear in the midst of ensemble playing; entirely solo piano pieces are used, as is a piano/tenor saxophone duet. Unaccompanied string bass solos are also frequent. Born in Philadelphia in 1938, McCoy Tyner attended the W est Philadelphia Music School and the Granoff Music School, by the age of fifteen, he led his iN n seven piece combo at Philadelphia clubs. He played with saxophonist Benny Golson in 1959 and later joined the Jazztet. organized by Golson and A rt Farmer. Tyner was a pianist with John Coltrane's Quintet tor almoat six years, during which he became a major force in improvisations! piano. While performing with Coltrane, McCoy Tyner toured extensively in the United States and Europe. “McCoy has an exceptionally well developed sense of form, both as a soloist and an accompanist," commented Col trane. "He will take a tune and build his own structure for it. He is always looking for the most personal way of expressing himself. He can take anything, no matter how weird, and make it sound beautiful." Admission to each performance is $4 general, $2 students. Tickets may be obtained through the Reed College office of campus events and at Music Millen nium, Ix>nghair Music and Stevens and Sons. There definately wasn't any communication gap between musicians and audience. Stanley played such goodies as: “Too Blue", “I Can Never Repay Your Ix>ve," "Too for Tea", and the title cut from probably his biggest selling album of all time, "Don't Mess W ith Mr. T". and others. Turrentine has; style, class, imagination, enormous talent and excellent timing. No wonder he was voted the Number One tenor saxophonist of 1975. Right on i Mr. • T w 111! The young people selected will work at trail-building, game control, park development and other projects located in state and national forests and parks in Oregon.
