Portland O bserver Iran executions scheduled The Committee for Artistic and Intellectual Freedom in Iran, baaed at Portland State University, is asking the support of American citizens in the effort to save ten political opponents of the Shah of Iran from the firing squad. An A P dispatch from Tehran on December 31 states that the government is planning to execute the ten persons who are charged with belonging to an urban guerrilla group and were allegedly instrumental in assassinating two United States Army colonels in Tehran last spring and another in June of 1973. Prior to the A P dispatch, the Iranian government controlled press ran a series of stories about the arrests. The names of seven individuals were given by the PSU students aid BEC government, but there was no mention of a trial, military or otherwise. The only evidence cited by the government against the seven was based on “confessions'* extracted by the 8 A V A K , the shah's secret police, from the defendenta. Although the names of all of the ten defendants have not been disclosed, the A P dispatch contained the name of Ms. Manijeh Ashrafzadeh Kermani as one of those condemned to death. Another women, Tahereh Sajjadi Tehrani was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In the Iranian context of the growing number of women who have stood up in political opposition to the shah's repressive regime, the execution of a woman political prisoner is a new and ominous sign. The members of the Black Educatonal Center expressed gratitude to the Portland State University Black Cultural Affairs Board for Its support of the Black Educatonal Center school and its Kwanza celebration. On January 11th, the Black Cultural Affairs Board donated the proceeds of that night's performance of "Five on the Black Hand Side" to the BEC school. operated by Black people to insure that the children receive the proper education to prepare them for the future. The BEC school depends solely on contributions for its support. Kwanza is a traditional African/Mlack holiday to celebrate and share the fruits of the passing year. In Portland. Answer: Oregon experienced record unemployment during Fiscal Year 1975 and the resulting Unemployment In surance (U I) payments pumped millions of dollars of U I reserve funds into the economy. This flow of U I benefits has been and is continuing to be a major factor in the stabilization of the unem ployed worker's purchasing power during what ia probably the moat severe recession since the depression of the 1930's. The recession caused claims activity under the regular State U I program to show a sharp increaae in F Y 75, compared with the F Y 74 level of activity. The number of weeks of unemployment claimed increased 58 percent for a total of 2,514,104 in FY 75 as compared with 1,594,178 in FY 74. Insured unemploy ment average 48,348 per week during FY 75 for an insured unemployment rate of 6.3 percent which compares with a rate of 4.2 percent experienced in F Y 74. Major factors in the higher insured unemploy ment rate included less activity among wood products, construction, transports tion equipment manufacturing and trade industries. In FY 75 ggoss unemployment in surance b en e fit p aym en ts to taled $124,898,449 for the regular State U I Program; $2,144,455 in U C F E (Unem ployment Compenaation for former Fed eral Employees); $4,651,806 in U C X (U n em p lo ym e n t Com pensation for Ex service personnel); $16,841,485 in F e d e r a l- S t a t e E x te n d e d B e n e fits ; $7,931,946 in Federal Supplemental Ben efits (FSB, paid by the Federal Govern ment) and $2,036.96 j iu S U A (Supple mental Unemployment Assistance, also paid by the Federal Government). Combined total gross U I benefit pay m e n ts in O re g o n a m o u n te d to $167,606,102 in Fiscal Year 1976 com pared with $72,272,499 in Fiscal Year 1974. The average Oregon U I Benefit check was $63.43 in F Y 76 compared with $64.22 in F Y 74. A good portion of the $9.21 increase in the average check amount was due to the minimum and maximum weekly benefit amounts being changed '»--im $23 to $24 and $76 to $88, respectively, effective September 29th, 1974. Again, effective the first week of July, 1975. minimum benefit was raised to $26 per week and maximum to $96 per week. \ “ The modules help me get through without overeating.
