Strayhand, Minister Special Miracle OIC continues expansion A t the Opportunities In dustrialization Centers' 10th Annual Convocation in Min neapolis, Minnesota. Rev erand Leon Sullivan, founder and Chairman of the Board oi OlCa of America, called for the establishment of 100 new OICs In the country in addition to the 100 that are already operating. Reverend Sullivan invited Vice Presi dent Gerald R. Ford to come to the inner city to see the needs of the poor and what could be done through pro grams like OIC to help America. Prayer Oh God of Truth, as we look forward to another year, it will bring many changes. The old year must give way for the new. Be then our guide to the answer to all uncertainties while we pray for this troubled world. In times of peace, greed, evil, fear and suspicion we ask that thy spirit of love abide so our leaders of nations and peoples of the world ran live in peace. Let us forgive blunders and give those courage to admit mistakes. Take away stubborn pride, hypocrisy and evil which devides men. Magnify that true s p irit which unites man over his own weaknesses. Ix^t joy, beauty, hope, abiding faith and blessings of peace and harmony live among us. Amen. prehensive Employment and Training Act of 1973, signed into law last December by President Nixon. The lead designation by name of OIC in the Definition Section of the Bill points to a new phase of growth tor OIC's development in the nation. In addition to the more than 100 OICs presently in opera tion, new OIC interest groups have been formed in 200 a d d itio n a l com m u n itie s . These communities are in Black, Chicano, Indian and Appalachian areas Reverend Sullivan's stated goal is "For every American a decent job, a decent home and an equal chance." He states that it is OIC's aim, by 1980, to train 3 m illion unemployed and underemployed Americans for useful jobs and to take 1 million people off welfare rolls. Reverend Sullivan has re quested federal, state, county and local government offi cials to "come see" OIC pro grams in action across the country that they might see first hand what OIC is doing in depressed areas of the nation, and to see what “ is possible" to help the poor, unemployed and underem ployed of America. He is hopeful that Vice President Ford's visit to Philadelphia OIC will encourage the "come see" visitations of OICs by public officials wherever they are established across the land. On Monday, March 11th, Vice President Ford went to Philadelphia and spent two hours touring OIC facilities. By the end of the inspection lou r, which included the Philadelphia Prototype, the old jailhouse (original site of the first OIC), Progress Plaza Shopping ('enter, Zion Bap tist Church. and Progress Aerospace Enterprises (an electronics assembly plant), Ford sounded like a believer: "This is a wonderful demon stratum of what can bo done with leadership and motiva tion and help from private and federal sources," he said. Vice President Ford left Philadelphia praising OIC and promising to try to get more money for it. "We've got to expand it and we will . . . We will do our best to get you more funds," he told Dr. Sullivan and other OIC officials before de parting. Since OIC’s beginning, the highly successful community based program has spread into more than 100 cities, has trained 200,(88) people of all races, colors and creeds for useful employment, and has placed 150,000 people into new jobs. The total annual income of OIC placed trainees approached $1 billion a year and more than 1200 million has already been saved the government in relief checks. A significant recent de velopment was OIC's in clusion by name in the Com PASSOVER I HE LAST SUPPER Mark 14:17-25 & John 13:34 From The Living Bible On the first day o f the Passover, Jesus arrived with the other disciples, and as they were sitting around the table eating, Jesus said, “ I solemnly declare that one o f you w ill betray me, one o f you who is here eating with me.” A great sadness swept over them, and one by one they asked him, “ Am I the one?” He replied, “ It is the one o f you twelve eating with me now 1 must die, as the prophets declared long ago; but, oh, the misery ahead for the man by whom I am betrayed. Oh, that he had never been born!” As they were eating, Jesus took bread and asked God’s blessing on it and broke it in pieces and gave it to them and said, “ Eat it - this is my body.” Then he took a cup o f wine and gave thanks to God for it and gave it to them; and they all drank from it. And he said to the, “ This is my blood, poured out for many, sealing the new agreement between God and man. I solemnly declare that I shall never again taste wine until the day I drink a different kind in the Kingdom o f God. And so I am giving a new commandment to you now — love each other just as much as I love you.” RELIGIOUS HERITAGE OF AMERICA WASHINGTON, D .C Famine (Continued from pg. 1. col. 31 two provinces of Tigre and Wollo and large sections of Gojam, Shoa and Hararge are affected.
