Before shopping for a sew ing machine, the booklet ad vises you to consider the kind of sewing you expect to do and how often you plan to use the machine. Most home sewing needs can be filled by a straight stitch machine that does straight stitching, forward and reverse. This is the simplest and least ex pensive machine you can buy. Attachments provided or bought separately also will perm it you to do zigzag stitching, buttonholes, over casting, ruffles or blind hem ming. But, if you buy too many attachments, the cost may be more than you would pay for a more versatile machine with a variety of built in features: • The basic zigzag machine sews a straight stitch and also can be set for zigzag stitching, with the needle swinging from side to side. The zigzag stitch is useful for overcasting, blind stitching, darning, satin stitching, but tonholing and sewing on but tons. • The more versatile zigzag machine offers from one to 25 or more stitch possibilities through use of cams.
