Rather it is a statement of praise, respect and gratitude for what mothers have done for all the children all over the world. “We sometimes only think of mothers on Mothers Day. g oo d C a rp e tin g taste w ith from The House of Carpets Give yourtelf a TREAT Come hi and see the FRESH NEW LOOK IN CARPETS * C O N V E N IE N T TERMS < Service wirtna • 50 mile radtaa e» oe extra ckerge OFEN EVERY FRIDAY EVENING T I L 9 F .M . “It may be good and not be o u r i . . . We have to remember this. “And sometimes." added Robert (Big Sonny! Edwards, “when it seems they are giving us advice that we don't agree with, we have to rem em ber they are only thinking of us. So, even if we feel we should not do what they tell us to. we must let them know we appreciate what they tell us. After all. you only have one mother. On the LP version of the song, which can be found on the album "Save the Chil dren", the Intruders involve themselves in a spontaneous rap about how it was to grow up on the streets of Philadelphia. They talk of troubles they got in and out of as kids, and how their mothers were instrumental in setting them straight, and helping them clean up their act. “When Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff First showed us the tune," commented Eu gene (Bird) Daughtry, "we were able to identify with it immediately. All of us were raised mostly by our mothers. They were always the ones around when you wanted or needed something. And, though the fathers were out making money, the mothers always had two jobs: Work ing for someone else, and keeping the family together." The Intruders, who would of course like to see their record make a lot of money for them, don't use financial reasons for making this tune well known. As Sam (Little Sonny) Brown puts it, "We want all mothers, especially our own, to recognize our sincerity in putting this tune together. We would, if nothing else happens, want them to know that this is our personal salute to mothers everywhere." I've been amused to find that if the Portland City Hall poli ticians actually gave Blacks everything that they've pro mised in so-called confiden tial meetings, Blscks would own the city. The question then is whe ther these techniques are applied to the white middle class neighborhood and its people. The answer is yes. The difference is that some of them receive positions of power in the total political scene rather than some insig nificant flunky role that is set up to relate only to the Black community. Black politicians. Black ad ministrators and all of us must play by the rules of the game. The rules say that it is expected that people will have constituences. We must use the techniques to en hance our ability to maintain some balance rather than have the techniques used for greater imbalance. Being partisan is the name of the game. Don't take a Black man's word, ask some white folks like Ivancie and Gold Schmidt. Do you think that they apologize for their di verse positions? Do you think that they appeal to the same following? They may both be controlled by the same dollar but their "fronts" are different. If we must negotiate, and this is ad mittedly part of the political process, then we should ne gotiate for contributions to the whole city. However, we should lean towards Albina: Someone has to. It is through this process that Albina, and any other neigh borhood, is best served.
