It Is a converted fam ily house where people live and the Church conducts its business. It has little resem- blence to a religious organi zation. Its meetings are more like a sales-pltch, and the name of God Is seldom in voked. Scientology is called, "the applied philosophy of know ing." "D ianetics,” la a radi cal, and to the layman, a confusing textbook full of In novative technical terms, re quiring a glossary tocompre- hend. Scientology is an advanced and highly organized program consisting of sharp Incisive analyses In the form of start lingly intimate questions and answers while the applicant, o r patant, is connected up to an E -m e te r, consisting of something like "tw o empty V -8 vegetable cans” hooked up with wires and batteries. It has been called a T ie detec tor* tut Scientologists p erfer to call it a "truth detector." Listening to tapes by the founder, and watching special ty prepared movies are also part of tla course of instruc tion and analysis which are basic features of Scientology. Persons firs t coming to Sci entology are called " p re - clears” . Those whose treat ments are successful are called " c le a rs ." Scientology claims to cure a larg e r per centage of persons than psy chiatrists, and do it more quickly. The person approaching Scientology is said to be be deviled by any n u m b e ro f'e n - g ram s.” These are the hang ups resulting from traumas. While on the E -M e te r the subject is asked a long lis t of exceedingly intimate and of ten embarrassing questions. The questions are asked and the emotional responses are recorded by an "auditor” . The organization also has "Reverends", who counsel with members. Everybody needs Scientology according to spokesmen of the organi zation. Paulette Cooper has written t paper-beck book. Published by Tower Publications, New York, entitled, "The Scandal of Scientology." It is sub titled, "A chilling examina tion of the nature, beliefs, and practices of the •’Now Religion." In the deeper analyses Sci entologists claim their sub jects can be led to remember events which happened ¡nearly .,u k M T e o ..- .<\c you why, and he has every right to ask that question. Many young people ask "w hy” to the work ethic, ami they want to hear more than just plain "s u rv iv e ", because Uncle Sam, two babas, and W elfare can handle survival. At the base of this ques tioning attitude is that one truth. That a person Is not a HUMAN DOING, he’s a "H U M A N B EIN G ", and he wants to BE before la can DO, He wants to know the basis of his existence. He must know "W hy am I here." "Why am I f a r e ." "W hat's It all about, Alfie?” Jesus was hip to this prob lem . This is why he got him self together, went into an untogether world, told the world to get itself together, and the only way to do it was through him . What He was saying is "People, be something. Be a spiritual be ing, at one with God." Jesus’ actions were an outgrowth of what he was. A man must fa before fa can do. Carnegie ’H ap py’ Pullen vAethodisf £ •O ^ the Monopoly games, baby. I ’ m tired of acquiring, acquir ing, and I don’t even know who I am y e t". Despite the accused lazi ness, there Is much to he gained from close observa tion. This philosophy has a very deep point to It. You ever wonder why so many on the littlest side of the generation gap are drop ping out of society? W ell, just ask the parent a few questions like "Why do you work so hard?” "T o earn money’’, he’ll say. Ask him why. "T o live and save it up", he’ll say. Ask him why. " T o re tire ," he’ ll say. Dig It, to retire. R etire, that's just what his son does at 15 years of age, he's got the same values. He just beat his old man to It by 50 years. There's a one word ques tion people are asking quite a bit lately - that one-word question is "W hy?" Nobody has the answers to that ques tion. When you tell a man to do something, he’s liable to ask h <o( childhood, and even back into the womb. Some claim to re call conversations between th eir parents at the time of their conception. Then they follow the trail back into for m e r lifetim es; and some claim to remember having lived on other planets.
