In photographing the series o f 15 h a lf-h o u r c o lo r film s w hich a re the basis for P o rt land Com m unity C o lle g e ’s f i r s t c re d it - by - television course, the following tasks w e re among those completed - not without some hazard: A fo r m e r businessman took his life in his hands by stop ping his c a r on the shoulder of a D e tro it expressw ay to take s till pictures of pollut ing smoke fro m a Big F o u r auto fac to ry . A fo r m e r college basketball s ta r piloted a single-engine plane at n ea r grasstop level to photograph hungry a llig a to rs in the F lo rid a E v e r glades. A cam eram an and a produ c e r spent a night so deep in the Everglades they had to spear frogs fo r food, andw ere in turn alm ost consumed by mosquitoes. Another crew probed the depths of New Y o rk C ity fo r scenes of poverty and o ver crow ding. Globetrotter tips T heodls Lee on Rebounding You w ill often find in re bounding that being tall does not n ecessarily mean you w ill get a ll the rebounds. Some of the best rebounders in bas ketball have been " s h o r t" men such as Wes Unseld, C het W a lk e r and B ill B rid g es. It is v e ry im portant to con centrate when rebounding. T r y and watch the shooter so you have some idea where the ball is going. Often the most im portant phase of rebounding is getting good position. I f you place you rself between the basket and the opponent, you a re m o te lik e ly to grab the re bound. T r y and block out the opponent to keep him fro m getting the b all. I t is good to think aggres sively when r e b o u n d i n g . Avoid slapping at the ball; try and g rab the ball cleanly although if you a re In position you should try and tip in re bounds If possible. T r y and be active under the boards and try and know w here the ball is and where the opponent is at all tim e s . Add ing m ore entertaim en t honors to th e ir monumental score, the Gordy recording a rtis ts recently received the award fo r the best album of 1972, " A l l D ire c tio n s " at the re cent annual NAACP Image Aw ards banquet held in Loa Angeles. Keeping in touch w ith the Black com munity by showing th e ir concern fo r its b e tte r m ent. the Tem pts w ere sworn in as voter re g is tra rs p rio r to the national elections and registered many new voters throughout the country in com pletion on th e ir national to u r. C h a rity benefits and appearances in parades and drives a re all a p art of the T em pts busy schedule. Being concerned a t a ll tim es fo r those in need has bestowed the T em pts w ith a c e rta in w arm hum anitarian feeling. And implem enting this feeling on stage and fo r society is what they a re all about. The Tem ptations all m ain tain an honest s p irit of re spect fo r one another, a p ro fessional approach to th e ir business of entertainm ent, and a dedication of indivi duality w ithin themselves to w ards the o verall effect of the group. O tis W illia m s , the group's quiet le a d e r through the years, has been a H ercu lian force in unifying a ll the e f fo rts of the group. "O u r audiences," he expressed, "c o m e to see what the T e m p - tations are all about a fte r ten years, and we not only have to be as good as we w e re , but we have to keep on being b e tte r. T h e re ’ s only one way to do that, we have to be totally together. We have to constantly think about what is best fo r the g ro u p ." O tis ’ group philosophy is im plemented w ith the tra n s i tional changes o ver the years w hile m aintaining th e ir num ber one stand. A nother one of the veteran m em bers, M elv in F ra n k lin added, " I have always been determ ined to make the Tem ptations the best group there is and to p reserve that feeling with all the m em bers D o n 't forget that the best offense in the w o rld has to have good rebounding in o rd e r to get the ball in p la y . A ll of the fellas feel the same w a y .” Damon H a r r is , the Tempts" newest m em ber, just one year ago had his dream turn to re a lity when he joined his singing heroes the T em p ta tions. H is energy and youthful effervescence endears him to the o th e r fo u r. " I think the key I alw ays try to keep in mind is what is best fo r the group. In the course of this com prehensive study it was also revealed that Blacks spend three p e r cent of th e ir to u l income on such personal care and beauty item s, expendi tures that a re 36 p e r cent higher than those of whites fo r s im ila r Item s.
